Full disclosure, this will mostly be a personal recollection of some of my favourite anime from 2010-2019. Of bloody course I didn't watch every single thing out there, so expect this list to only contain a small subsection of anime. This list will also mainly serve its purpose to understand myself better, as they reveal my taste in anime and what things I do enjoy most out of there. This will be split into two categories: Series and Standalones, for Series I will only take entries from 2010 onwards, so, sorry K-On!. And if a series' sequels happen to be bad, they count as sullying the series. Sorry Milky Holmes.
Series:
5) Space Dandy
He's a Dandy guy. In Space! A wacky as hell comedy with a lot of heart. Almost unpredictable and always fresh, Space Dandy never fails to make me grin like a maniac whenever I watch it. Episode 8 of the second season is especially a highlight for me, not because it's the funniest episode, but because in spite of it all, the show managed to successfully evoke a sense of melancholy and sadness in me in an otherwise manic comedy series.
4) Teekyuu
It's Teekyuu.
3) K-On!!
Since I'm only taking entries that actually aired this decade, I'm leaving out the first season. But there's no real loss, K-On truly peaked for me in its second season. The character interactions are a definite highlight in the show, with the show experimenting with different pairings to great effect. Very consistent with its comedy, and truly heartbreaking at one point, K-On immersed me so much in its setting it made me recall my own time in high school and university, and the fleetingness of youth itself. The episode where you briefly go into Azusa's perspective as Yui and the rest invite you for fireworks will never leave me.
2) Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magicka
The quintessential Mahou Shoujo of the decade, it forever changed the landscape of Dark Mahou Shoujo in the mainstream. While they were dark Mahou Shoujo in the past, they either concluded on a happy/bittersweet note, or never reached the degree of popularity that is Madoka. For me, while the main series was never my personal favourite, the sequel film Rebellion is what truly made this series special for me. There aren't many shows were I will willingly watch a 10 second scene of a girl turning into pink goo (or many shows featuring girls turning into pink goo for that matter), but Rebellion delivers on that and many more. And conclusively, delivers a happy ending that Homura so deserves after all she has been through. A no brainer choice for my list, but edging it out is...
1) Senki Zesshou Symphogear
Without a doubt the highlight of the decade for me. An intense action series that wears its stupidity proudly as a badge of honor, it never fails to be entertaining even at its lowest points. It helps that the music is damned good. Really damned good. While lacking in the story section, the hype, the adrenaline, the setpieces more than made up for it in this incredible series. It got 5 seasons, so it obviously did something right. It also works perfectly as the antithesis to my second entry, with its life-affirming themes to its optimism, where all you need to solve your problems is your determination to fist.
NB: If Futari wa and TD never existed, Milky Holmes would have been no.2 on this list.
Standalones:
5) Yuri Kuma Arashi
I wanted to put an Ikuhara show in this and it was a close call between this and Mawaru Penguindrum. While I acknowledge that Penguindrum is the more beloved show, I ended up with YKA instead because I was so enamoured with it all the way through. Sure it has pacing problems, but it was a great ride while it lasted and never lets up. Plus, Yuri. So I'm biased.
4) Inferno Cop
But of course.
3) Samurai Flamenco
Samurai Flamenco's true strength isn't its escalation in its absurdity, but its ability to not only make sense of that while de-escalating everything back to square one. At the end of the day, the drama with Gotou and his girlfriend ended up being the most poignant plot thread of the entire series in spite of its mundanity. And of course, as with any great roller-coaster ride, you always end up back where you started in familiar territory after all the madness is over.
2) Kill la Kill
Let me tell you a story. It was 2013, and young SanaeK10 wanted to join a video game club. Young SanaeK10 joined the anime club by complete accident and laid eyes on "Annie May" for the very first time. It was Kill la Kill. The rest is history. Clothing is Sin! Mankind's Original Sin!
1) Flip Flappers
Let me tell you another story. In 2016 I pretty much had enough of anime, I watched all that was popular but nothing ended up clicking with me and was about to give up on anime altogether. Then somehow I discovered this absolute gem of a show. Until this day, even as bad as a season can initially seem, I always keep an eye out for the next special show that would inspire me as Flip Flappers once did, a show that changed my perceptions on anime forever, and solidified me as a bona fide fan of anime. And often times I do. There's always this overlooked gem of a show that I would pass over at first glance but end up being a personal favourite. And that, is why I watch anime. Flip Flappers doesn't appeal to everyone, and frankly I don't care. It appeals to me a lot and I love it for what it is.
So what have we learned? We have learned that SanaeK10 places a large emphasis on comedies with heart and generally avoids anime entirely on drama. Though, what surprised me the most is how mainstream my choices end up being (for the most part). Goes to show that popular shows are popular and beloved for a reason, but in my heart I will always make room for the Flip Flappers out there. The weird, borderline experimental shows that challenge common wisdom and norms to make something that, may not necessary be free from flaws, but holds a special place in my heart.
Here's to the 20s for another decade of madness and moe!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
Yeah so I have no idea what to watch right now
Sooo I guess I'll just watch this film again until I can make up my mind
-
lol so I told my mom on Sunday, "You know, I actually watched The Last Jedi three times in the theater." and then she was all like "You did?" and I said "Yeah."
Then I continued "Yeah so I watched The Last Jedi three times in the theater; that's how much loved it. ...I watched The Rise of Skywalker once, and I thought. 'Yeahh, once... Once is enough.'" lololol
-
I just randomly remembered Star Wars was on Disney+, so I guess this is the very first thing I'm ever going to watch on Disney+ forever onwards.
Very good choice if I say so myself though honestly aha
-
Yoda (to Luke Skywalker): "The greatest teacher, failure is."
So wise... Such words of wisdom.
And then he said something about the burden of being a master probably something about how time passes and there'll come a time when the pupil surpasses the master but like, you know Yoda, he says it in like ten words or less so lololol maybe that's why I couldn't
-
Purple haired women idk her name: "Leia used to always say, 'Hope is like the sun- if you only believe in it when you see it-"
Poe: "you'll never make it through the night."
I like that... So deep... I can't believe I almost forgot about it.
-
yes
yep this film is still straight up fire
It's still so beautiful alright
Still holds up well
I'm really in the mood to watch Episode IV and V now and then eventually the rest of the Star Wars films in order of release like I did three years ago when I watched all the films at the time so everything from Episode IV all the way to TLJ but I'm a bit worried it might just be a bit too much Star Wars idk fam
-
yeah ok so according to edgy edgelord emo boy in recovery (lol) Kylo Ren here
He's saying that Rey's parents were nobodies... poor traitors who sold Rey for some drinks or something? Sooo there's no way that Rey is Anakin and Padme's daughter
UNLESS my mom is right??? idk anymore???? lololol Kylo Ren could be feeding us lies after all, but hmm somehow I doubt this??? I don't know anymore guys
lol also how would Kylo even know that about Rey's parents anyway? I kind of smell a plothole here... Unless it was explained in Force Awakens, which unfortunately I can't remember anything from that at all at the moment :(
-
Rose (to Finn): "Not fighting what we hate; saving what we love."
Mm... Beautiful.

Finish Them - Weekly Self-Challenge (Initial Declaration)
It’s New Year’s Eve and as 2019 comes to a close I will soon be doing my usual reflection post on the year, talking about my 2019 Resolutions. Spoiler: Most of them were not very successful for various reasons and will be carrying over into my 2020 Resolutions!
One of the biggest failures out of my 2019 Resolutions was the trim down my “Watching” and On-Hold anime (“Watching” being in quotes because a lot of the stuff in that category aren’t actually being actively watched). So! To try to make an effort to succeed at this Resolution for 2020, I decided to bring in some gamification to keep me on track, starting a new Self-Challenge for the year! Considering that my Movie-Per-Day Self-Challenge was rather successful and that I’ve always had a good degree of success with the official MAL watching/reading Challenges, I figured making a Challenge out of finishing my stagnate anime list items would also be pretty successful!
So what is this Self-Challenge all about? Well, as the title of this blog says, this is my “Finish Them - Weekly Self-Challenge”. Basically every week by Sunday throughout the year 2020 (with my first due date being 12 January), I must finish at least one of my stagnate anime list items. Below behind the “Spoiler” button is a very long list of anime which have finished airing at the time of this post, but I have not yet finished them. They are broken into three different categories: “Watching”, On-Hold, and Dropped - Possible Revivals. Now, the main goal of this Challenge is to get my “Watching” down to only things that I’m ACTIVELY watching and to trim down my On-Hold list to things that are mostly on hold for good reason (like waiting for a new OVA episode to come out or for a new fansub group to pick up an old series). Therefore, those two categories will take priority, but I will consider picking back up some shows that I’ve previously put in my Dropped list.
Also, let it be known that while this Challenge is called “Finish Them”, to finish an anime doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be Completed. While completing an anime is preferred and I will do my best to at least move one of these items into my Completed anime each week, some of these may also end up getting definitely Dropped for good instead. Similarly to how I used to do my old Anime Watching Challenge posts, I will be keeping this running list below and for each item that I “finish”, I will bold the title, write a little blurb about it, and it will be removed from the list for subsequent updates.
Oh, and one final note: I do have a good amount of hentai as stagnate items on here and have added a -hentai- label to each of these titles so that people (including myself) don’t click on them while at work or something. XD
So that’s about it! I’m looking forward to truly cleaning up my anime list on here! Wish me luck! ^_^
