ANIME REVIEW (Fire Tripper)
Fire Tripper is based off a story from Rumiko Takahashi’s ‘Rumic World’ series, the other segments are: Warau Hyōteki, Maris: The Chōjo, and Ningyo Shirīzu. Despite my affection for Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura, I couldn’t fathom what this particular OVA was trying to say. There are a couple of cool ideas, like time warping via fire and multiple copies of a single person floating through separate time periods, but Fire Tripper fails to monopolize the interesting aspects of its plot.
—Story/Characters
The series follows an ordinary teenage girl named Suzuko, who—prior to her introduction—dreams that she is a little girl from the *Feudal era, that dies by getting crushed by a wooden beam in a burning shack. After waking up, Suzuko decides to walk a small neighborhood boy, Shūhei, home from the park. He shows off the scars from having his appendix removed and as they are walking, there is a fatal gas explosion from a nearby power plant. Both of them are caught in the explosion and, suddenly, Suzuko is suddenly laying in a pile of corpses in a battlefield.
*Also known as the Kamakura period: 1185–1333.
A group of gangly vagabonds attempt to rape her, but she is rescued by a teenage boy named Shūkumaru. Shūkumaru brings Suzuko back to his village, gives his younger sister (Suzu) a bell as a gift, and then claims that he will marry Suzuko. Afterwards, Shūkumaru takes Suzuko into a storehouse to get her clean clothes. It is revealed that Shūkumaru has fleeced corpses for their wares and collected them for supplies to aid the villagers. Suzuko finds Shūhei’s t-shirt among the pile of clothes, deduces that he must have been sent back in time with her, and tries to find him… but to no avail.
After a night of Shūkumaru trying to bed her but, drunkenly, passing out instead—Suzuko has an epiphany after seeing Suzu’s bell again; remembering that she has an identical one back in her own world! Suzuko then deducts that ‘Suzu’ is an alternate timeline version of herself, meaning that Shūkumaru is actually her brother!
Suzuko is tormented by the fact that they are siblings, because she has fallen in love with Shūkumaru. The village once again burns, like in her dream, because of the evil *Akauma. The scene from her dream is replicated and ‘Suzu’ is sent to the future, after being crushed by a fiery beam. Suzuko then realizes that the fire is a catalyst to travel between the past and the future. Shūkumaru is losing to Akauma, so Suzuko uses the fire to transport her and Shūkumaru to the future.
*Akauma is a play on the Japanese word ‘akuma’ (悪魔), which means ‘demon’ or ‘devil.’
After they arrive, Suzuko takes Shūkumaru to her house to dress his wounds. While doing so, she notices that Shūkumaru has the same scar that Shūhei had from his appendix removal and realizes they’re the same person! It turns out that Shūkumaru had gone back in time over a decade earlier than she had and grown up in the Feudal era, therefore Shūkumaru is not biologically related to her—he is an adopted brother from the other dimension. They then realize that they had gone back to the period, right before the initial gas explosion. So, they use the factory’s explosion again to go back in time again and announce their engagement to the other villagers. The end.
Oh man! Where do I begin, first of all, what is the point of this story? Did Rumiko Takahashi have a elementary schooler as a neighbor and thought, ‘If both of us used a time warp, then that kid could be my husband some day!’ Another point, and a common point of contention within the isekai genre, is wouldn’t she miss her family? How is she so okay with living in the Feudal era and never seeing them again? Does she just plan to set herself on fire, or something, to go visit them?
Another thing that I didn’t understand is why did Shūhei arrive in the Kamakura period—over a decade prior to Suzuko making it there? Does that mean that she was stuck in a dimensional interstice all that time? If that’s the case, how were Suzuko and Shūkumaru able to time travel perfect in synch the other two times? Towards the end, they knew that the power plant was going to explode… why didn’t they try to warn anyone, instead of using the explosion to go back in time? Also, when Shūkumaru and Suzuko returned—the village had been completely decimated by Akauma and it looked like many people had lost their lives; Shūkumaru bails on people that depend on his protection and then happily announces his soon-to-be marriage upon his return? What the hell?
As you can see, the story makes no sense whatsoever and there isn’t even anything to be gleaned from it. Heck, the characters aren’t even likable. Suzuko is a bland Mary Sue, Shūkumaru is a barbarian, Suzuko’s parents don’t have any personality, and Akauma is just a typical mongoloid pillager. This is the first time, in quite a while, that I’ve felt that I completely wasted my time on an anime!
I guess it’s to be expected, the only other ‘Rumic World’ story that I’ve seen is Ningyo Shirīzu, also known as ‘Mermaid Saga’ and I didn’t care for that OVA either. I haven’t watched the television series yet, but it is relatively low on my priority list—seeing as the OVA was a mess!
—Technical
There’s nothing particularly bad about the visual direction, but there’s nothing memorable either. It just looks like your typical run-of-the-mill ‘80s OVA. The director, Motosuke Takahashi, is known for directing *Warau Hyōteki, *Maris: The Chōjo, Cosmo Police Justy, Aitsu to Lullaby: Suiyobi no Cinderella, and Harbor Light Monogatari: Fashion Lala yori. Sadly, Motosuke Takahashi passed away on November 8th, 2007 due to lung cancer complications.
*Both Warau Hyōteki and Maris: The Chōjo are from Rumiko Takahashi’s ‘Rumic World’ series.
Despite my dislike of the story, this production brought in a few A-list seiyū. The first is Yū Mizushima, voice of Shūkumaru. Mr. Mizushima was cast regularly as the lead protagonist in many anime productions of the ‘70s and ‘80s, usually either voicing an action hero or the love interest—in series whose target demographic was primarily little girls, like Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami and Tokimeki Tonight. Mr. Mizushima is still doing voice work for anime, at age 63—as well as doing Japanese dubs of live-action shows, like voice-overs for franchises like Friends and Star Wars! Notable Japanese animation roles include:
• Ryō Asuka, Devilman
• Shukumaru, protagonist of Fire Tripper
• Isamu Kurogane, Hyaku Jūō GoLion
• Toshio Ōtomo, Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami
• Subaru Equuleus, Saint Seiya Omega
• Luigi, Super Mario Bros: Peach Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!
• Shun Makabe, Tokimeki Tonight
• Clow Reed, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE
• Telemachus, deuteragonist of Uchū Densetsu Ulysses 31
• Riki Muroi, Mahō no Yōsei Persia
• Marion Fiesse, protagonist of Natsu e no Tobira
• Takeru Myōjin, Rokushin Gattai God Mars
• Shō Fukamachi, protagonist of Kyōshoku Sōkō Guyver
• Tsutomu Sugioka, protagonist of Meikyū Monogatari -EN: Neo Tokyo-
• Hikaru, protagonist of Time Patrol Tai Otasukeman
• Gai Tanbara, protagonist of Time Slip Ichimannen
• Sanada Ikkyū, protagonist of Ikkyū-san (1978)
• Akemi Nakajima, protagonist of Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei
• Bander, protagonist of One-Million Year Trip: Bander Book
Suzuko’s seiyū was Sumi Shimamoto. At age 65, she is still working in the industry and even does video game voice overs, as well as Japanese dubbing for foreign films—Star Wars (Princess Leia) and Watchmen (Sally Jupiter) are among her credited roles! She’s similar to Yū Mizushima in the breadth of her voice acting repertoire. Notable Japanese animation roles include:
• Yukiko Kudō, Shin’ichi’s mother in Detective Conan
• Ginrei, Giant Robo
• Eirin Yagokoro, 東方Project
• Kohaku Tsukishiro, Hitomi’s grandmother in Irozuku Sekai no Ashita Kara
• Nausicaä, Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä
• Kanata Izumi, Konata’s mother in Lucky☆Star
• Clarisse d’Cagliostro, Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro
• Kyoko Otonashi, Maison Ikkoku
• Rei Asaka, Oniisama e…
• *Asuka Mizunokoji, Urusei Yatsura
• Ishizu Ishtar, Yū-Gi-Ō!
*Hilariously, Suzuko and Asuka Mizunokoji look exactly alike. Asuka—Urusei Yatsura, is in love with her brother and Suzuko—Fire Tripper, thinks she’s in love with her brother. Both are from separate Rumiko Takahashi stories. And, coincidentally, both have the same seiyū!
Akauma’s seiyū, Tesshō Genda, is another veteran voice actor that continues to work in the industry. His age is not listened online but, on his biography, it states that he has been working as anime voice actor since the ‘70s. He does Japanese dubbing for numerous Batman animations and God of War, and is known as the Kevin Conroy of Japan. Notable anime roles include:
• Takanori Jingūji, 3-Gatsu no Lion
• Shū, Dragon Ball GT
• Master Chief, Halo Legends
• Slegger Law, Mobile Suit Gundam
• Terry Sanders Jr., Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
• Kurama, Naruto
• D, Project A-ko
• Aldebaran Taurus, Saint Seiya
• Optimus Prime, Transformers: The☆Headmasters
• Rei, Urusei Yatsura
• Violence Jack, Violence Jack: Harlem Bomber-hen
• Fukuzō Moguro, Warau Salesman (2017)
• Younger Toguro, Yū Yū Hakusho
Overall, I wouldn’t recommend Fire Tripper to anyone! If you’re looking for an isekai where a female protagonist is transported to the Feudal era, Inuyasha is your best bet. If there weren’t talented people working on the visuals and audio, I probably would have rated Fire Tripper a 1/10 but, because of the presentation, I rate it a 2/10!

Top Winter Season 2020 Anime
Dude, it’s already getting to the year 2020! Talk about time flying by and last year had a fairly great amount of very enjoyable shows to check out but the question is what will this new year and this start of a brand new decade be in store for us? The possibilities are endless!! And there will be more “isekai” series, I’m sure of that. As I do every three months I’ll be sorting out the series I believe are highly worth watching and list my top ten most anticipated anime of the season, which will include continuing works from the past, as well as list any other series or movies worth checking out. Please bear in mind that I may not personally write impressions on all series mentioned due to availability and personal time but will be making updates to the list once confirmed these series will be available legally to watch in the U.S.
10.) Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T - A Certain Scientific Railgun T
Japanese Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVudpKEJcYo
Can you believe this is now the seventh anime series of the constantly ongoing (and extremely convoluted) “A Certain Magical Index” universe? Although honestly the whole series has been pretty intriguing with it’s whole “magic vs. science” themes going all throughout within it’s near futuristic world and plus it almost like watching a Marvel comics anime. This will be the third anime series based on the side character of Mikoto “Railgun” Misaka whom has extremely strong “esper” powers and is able to conduct high amounts of electricity through her fingers, also is jokingly given the nickname of “biri-biri” or “shocker”. At least it’s good news that the same director of the last two Railgun series, Tatsuyuki Nagai (whom has also done both “Toradora” and “Ano-hana”), as well as the same studio J.C. Staff, is on board for the latest anime however it’s being written by the “Shokugeki no Soma” anime composer Shogo Yasukawa. The third series of “Index” was a pretty hefty mess story-wise and the “Accelerator” spin-off was just a total mess altogether yet I do see a slight glimmer of hope for Railgun’s third entry and really crossing my fingers this doesn’t become a shit-show like the last two entries, the last RG series was awesome and really hoping the new one follows suit but I’m not holding my breath for it.
Premieres on 01/10 but no official streaming is planned (Betting on Funimation and/or Crunchyroll)
9.) Darwins Game
English Subbed Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyegnzQ1CrM
This is based off a manga series from the group “FLIPFLOPs” and the story follows an older teen named Kaname whom accepts an online invite by his friend to play a smart phone game called, of course, “Darwin’s Game” but then later finds out that there is no way to “quit” the game and is forced to partake in a survival game of life and death. The situation somewhat of reminds me of the 2011 anime series “Future Diary” where every “contestant” is in a giant murder game to eliminate their opponents. Also weird that the manga creators were behind a very cutesy comedy series called “Nekogami Yaoyorozu” or “Everyday Tales of a Cat God” but this series is a total 180 in that spectrum. It’s animated by studio Nexus whom last did the mecha/magical girl series “Granbelm” earlier this year and it’s directed by Yoshinobu Tokumoto who’s only other major work was also on a very cutesy comedy series “Comic Girls”. I don’t really think this is going be a total award winner here but “Future Diary” was one of my most rememberable anime series watched from the 2010 decade and I’m all up for some more nutty, murder spree action, although just hope it turns out better than “Zodiac Wars”.
Premieres on 01/03 and is exclusively streaming on Funimation Now and then starting on 02/02 will be on Crunchyroll, VRV, HIDIVE and Hulu.
8.) Kyokou Suiri - In/Spectre
English Subbed Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlgI5-2J5rU
Based on the novel series by Kyo Shirodaira this is a supernatural mystery thriller series that follows a young girl named Kotoko and she has become a powerful intermediary between the “yokai” or Japanese spirits of folklore and humanity and keeps a close eye out on the most dangerous of spirits. She then meets a young man named Kurou whom the yokai has granted him healing powers and decide to team up to handle “renegade yokai” in order to prevent the supernatural from harming reality. This series is also the latest anime from studio Brains Base whom hasn’t done all too much great stuff lately yet has been behind some really enjoyable series in the past like on “Baccano!”, “Spice & Wolf” and the first season of “Durarara!!” and coming from the latest trailer seem they are putting in some pretty nice work into the show. Another neat fact with this is it’s directed by Keiji Goto whom is more known for doing design work on late 90’s anime series such as “Bakuretsu Hunter” and “Martian Successor Nadesico” yet has directed on such series as all of “Kiddy Grade” and most recently on “Endride”. Another worthy note is the series is being adapted by Noboru Takagi and has worked on series such as “Baccano!”, “Durarara!!”, the new “Legend of the Galactic Heroes” and “Golden Kamuy”. Yet even with these great people involved with the anime I don’t think this is going to be a series that will really take itself seriously, hell, they fight against a demon possessed idol singer with giant boobs for f**ks sake, and plus I’m not the biggest fan of series based on yokai and old folk tales but overall it looks fun to watch and will definitely give it a solid shot.
Premieres on 01/12 and is streaming on Crunchyroll and VRV.
7.) - Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasuna! - Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
English Subbed Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acYbdQImkp4
This is the latest anime from famed creators Masaaki Yuasa and studio “Science Saru”, whom worked on both “Devilman Crybaby”, “Lu Over the Wall” and their latest movie “Ride Your Wave”, and this will be the director’s first TV anime work since 2014’s “Ping Pong the Animation”. It’s based off of a manga series by Sumito Oowara and follows a young girl named Midori whom wants to create an anime yet really cannot do it by herself but then gets help by another girl, Tsubame, whom really wants to become an animator and also with the help of Midori’s friend Sayaka the three slowly but surely work towards making their “ultimate world” into reality. I’m personally not a huge fan of director Yuasa’s work, I did watch all of “Crybaby” and while it was heavily praised by reviewers and anime fans, I hated it and didn’t enjoy much of it’s highly abstract styles, “Lu” was more fun to watch but I didn’t think it was all that great and I’m not all too interested in seeing “Wave” (although will most likely see it in a future IRL anime meet-up). Yet this series I believe is more about the mindset of “if you can dream it, you can do it” and it’s definitely the most imaginative anime of the Winter 2020 season and I’m highly intrigued into what’s in store, it could be a complete artsy-fartsy shit-show but deep down it’s really something I would check into and may turn out to be a surprise hit of the winter season.
Premieres on 01/06 and is streaming on Crunchyroll and VRV.
6.) Somali to Mori no Kamisama - Somali and the Forest Spirit
English Subbed Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xfw57amXb8Q
Now I usually don’t go straight into anime that without a doubt is going to massively gut punch me into the feels cage and for me to get myself in watching those type of shows is mostly based off of other viewers impressions. However just because of this series highly fantastical world and subject matter I am highly interested in seeing what is in store for this adventure. Based on fantasy manga series by Yako Gureishi it takes place in a separate world that’s ruled by otherworldly creatures like spirits, goblins, demi-humans and other strange-folk while pure humans are completely outlawed, yet one day a golem-type creature finds a lone female child and they become highly bonded, even making themselves a father/daughter pairing, however the golem only has a certain timeframe left in it’s lifespan to take care of the child. The series immediately is giving me huge “Made in Abyss” vibes and seems to be taking place in a vast world that’s full of unique and strange wonders. The show’s quality I don’t think is going to match with the same looks as Abyss but at least a respected studio is behind it: Satelight, best known for working on the most recent “Macross” series as well as on the “Symphogear” series and most recently on “Cannon Busters”. It’s also coming from director Kenji Yasuda whom has also worked on the Macross Delta series. Much like with Eizouken above either this can be a complete bomb or one of the surprise hits of the season and I’m really hoping this one is going to be worth while to watch.
Premieres on 01/10 and is streaming on Crunchyroll and VRV
5.) ID:Invaded
English Subbed Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc7Y0BvEYQk
This is the latest anime series directed by Ei Aoki and he has been behind some of the best shows in the last 10 years, including “Fate/Zero”, “Aldnoah.Zero” and “Re:Creators” (ok, the 3rd my not be the best of the 2010 decade and I never finished it but it’s still pretty enjoyable, IMO). The story follows a famous and highly talented detective named Sakaido however he landed himself in jail after committing revenge crimes following the death of her daughter, now he helps out the police to solve cold-blooded crimes and through a special system is able to “invade” into a criminal’s “ID”. The story seems like it’s pulled straight out of the mind of Christopher Nolan, of Batman and Inception fame, and also reminds me of a video game that was also about solving crimes within criminal minds: “Remember Me”. This series is also coming from the same writer and creator of one of the best anime of the whole 2010 decade: “The Dragon Dentist”, Otaro Majio! (and if you haven’t seen that then you are missing out one of of the most unique and highly spectacular anime ever made!). Even with an amazing director and writer at the helms there is still a big downside: it’s being done by studio NAZ and they really do not have any great anime in their track record at all. The last series I saw from them was “Angolmois” and honestly that could be been an amazing series to watch but it got highly botched by heavy production value dips midway through. Of course there’s always hoping they have learned their past lessons even though that was done just last year and honestly I’m highly praying for this one to be successful and just not suck.
Premieres on 01/05 and is streaming on Funimation Now and Hulu. The first two episodes were previewed online on 12/15 for only 24 hours however I didn’t get the chance to watch that.
4.) Pet
Japanese Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhHBR9VWZOE
You might have remembered this one in my last picks for the fall anime season yet the production was delayed and really hoping the three extra months will be making this a really worth while show to watch and after finally seeing full trailers of the series I highly believe it will. As mentioned before this is the latest series from “Golden Kamuy” anime creators Geno Studio and the story revolves around people who possess the ability to infiltrate people’s minds and even manipulate memories (so it’s pretty much the anime version of “Inception”) and their powers have been used in the underworld for covering up incidents, assassinations and other bad things, yet these people also have the power to even destroy other people’s own mental psyche. It’s based on a manga series done by Ranjo Miyake and it’s directed by Takahiro Oomori whom has done some well respected works as “Baccano!”, “Durarara!!”, “Samurai Flamenco” and the “Jigoku Shoujo” series and it’s writer Sadayuki Murai has worked on the adaptions of both “Knights of Sidonia” and “Zodiac Wars”. I really think this is going to be a super trippy and interesting series to check out, yet hate to say this may get into some LGBTQ issues and conflicts but I really don’t want to have those aspects distract me from watching this series and hopefully should be one to remember from this coming season.
Premieres on 01/06 and is streaming exclusively on Amazon.
3.) Kuutei (Drifting) Dragons
Japanese Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiKn2nKpxHI
Older Teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=salxFmfOl0k
Based on the highly artistically detailed manga series by Taku Kuwabara this story follows the crew of the airship “Quin Zaza” and it’s skilled dragon hunters and while most people believe dragons are an immediate threat to all of humanity their goal is to convince them there are plentiful benefits from killing them including medicine, oils and even an excellent source of food. Actually the story seems to be more heavily invested to finding out what tasty foods can come from eating dragons. I did check out a couple of the beginning manga volumes and I was highly interested in it and really made me wonder if they will ever make an anime out of it and now here we are. It’s being done by Polygon Pictures so this is an all CG-based anime and they have worked on titles such as “Star Wars Resistance”, “Knights of Sidonia”, the more recent Godzilla and Blame! CG movies and have also just released the series “Levius” on Netflix. It’s also directed by Tadahiro Yoshihira whom assisted on the “Blame!” movie and it’s adapted to anime by Makoto Uezu whom has done countless amount works like on the “Konosuba” series, “Assassination Classroom”, “Akame ga Kill!”, “Heroic Legend of Arslan” and “Katanagatari”. While I’m not the biggest fan of CG anime shows I still believe this is going to be one of the most fun and interesting shows of the season and already think this is going to be one wild ride from beginning to end and really don’t want to have anyone miss out on this.
Premieres on 01/09 and will be streaming exclusively on Netflix in the near future, if you want to watch it during it’s Japanese TV run you will have to resort to fansub downloads or other non-legal streaming sites.
2.) Dorohedoro
Japanese Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS6l1K19N1U
Based on the highly gritty, post-apocalyptic manga series by “Q Hayashida” the story takes place between two separate dimensions: “The Hole” which is the dilapidated city humans reside in and the “Sorcerers’ World” where magic users reside. Some sorcerers are able to jump into the human world via portals and they actually test their powers on unsuspecting humans, one of them is a man named Caiman and one of those magic users turned his head into a lizard and completely erased his memory! Also with these magic effects he somehow gains the power to not be harmed by any sorcerer’s magic and seeks to hunt down the same magic user that turned him into the beast he is now, also he is able to sense that user by biting down on the victim’s head (ok…). This series just seems so damned weird but also has some pretty sick and twisted styles that give it a really mature and edgy feel and honestly looks pretty badass, also kind of reminds me of the “Borderlands” video games from Gearbox. It’s being done by studio MAPPA whom have worked on some highly enjoyable and well praised anime in the past, including one of my favorite series from all of the 2010 decade: “Dororo” however this is possibly the first time they are more incorporating both 2D and 3D animation into one series, the animation isn’t all the greatest coming from the trailers but they do have some pretty impressive styles to them. It’s being directed by Yuuichiro Hayashi who’s done both seasons of “Kakegurui” and the earlier “Garo” series and it’s adapted to anime by Hiroshi Seko who’s been doing an utterly fantastic job with “Vinland Saga” and also has worked on “Banana Fish”, “Inuyashiki”, the “Mob Psycho 100” series and “Seraph of the End”. This is my most hyped TV anime of the winter season and even though I don’t know all too much of the events and stories that happen in the manga series I more or less really want to get into this one totally blind and just see what crazy shit this series is going to throw at me and I think I’m going to have a really wild time with this one.
Premieres on 01/13 and will be streaming exclusively on Netflix in the near future, if you want to watch it during it’s Japanese TV run you will have to resort to fansub downloads or other non-legal streaming sites.
1.) Made in Abyss: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei - Dawn of the Deep Soul
Japanese Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNwD_Hx1GHY
Roughly a little more than two years after the series finale of the TV anime we are now finally getting more to one of the best dark fantasy adventure series ever made in the last 10 years! The story will be picking up immediately after the events of the TV series where Riku, Reg and their new furry new companion Nanachi must travel together to delve deeper into the depths of the abyss however will be meeting up with a familiar foe from Nanachi’s past. All of the same members that worked on the TV series are handling the new movie including studio Kinema Citrus, director Masayuki Kojima, writer Hideyuki Kurata, as well as composer Kevin Penkin with that completely amazing soundtrack! While the TV series went through the first three volumes of the manga I’m best guessing this movie will be going over all of the 4th and possibly some or even most of the 5th volume, and call be a lame-o I actually own all seven current volumes of the manga released in the U.S. and I have not read any of them yet, I did slightly scan over what happens in the next two volumes after the anime but I didn’t really get into great details with them and really want this movie to completely surprise me, just like how the TV series did. I am completely hyped to see this, still somewhat bummed they are releasing this as a movie and not making a brand new TV season but hoping the increased budget will be making this one to remember. Lastly we just got confirmation that the movie will be rated R15 which is the equivalent of a R-rated movie in the U.S. and now really makes be wonder what f**ked up shit and shocking horrors are going to be in store! (And makes me want to finally read the manga up to volume 5)
Premieres on 01/17 only in Japan, Sentai Filmworks will be releasing this in U.S. theaters in the near future, really crossing my fingers be out sometime by March or April.
*** Honorable Mentions ***
- Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna — English Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg98Mj6-_e8
The first digi-destined are all grown up, now in their late teens and early 20’s, and this will be the final adventure of the original TV anime cast! Turn on the feels generators! Much like the earlier more recent Digimon anime that featured the old cast this one will also be a theatrical movie and will be released in English by Toei Animation however it’s not positive if this will be split up and streamed online as before or will only be shown in theaters. However this will not be mainly animated by Toei and will be mostly handed by studio Yumeta Company who’s only worked on “My Sweet Tyrant”, “Voice of Fox” as well as on “Cannon Busters” and it’s from the director of “Twin Star Exorcists”. Haters be hating but I more liked Digimon than any Pokemon anime, the last movies weren’t all too perfect but I had a fun time watching them and again just more watching it for the nostalgia factors. Premieres on 02/21 in Japan, U.S. release is pending.
- Magia Record: Mahou Shouju Madoka Magica Gaiden - Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story — English Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G-jMRpeQ7k
While not a second season of the strangely twisted magical girl anime this one is based off of the smart phone game that’s within the same universe and characters of the original, yet it’s highly unknown if any of the original cast members will be making an appearance however we definitely know our little immortal rabbit-cat Kyubey is back with more “contracts”. Just like with the original series studio Shaft will be animating the new anime however none of the original directors, writers and music composers will be part of this (man, no Kajiura?), it’s actually being done by a group of animators that created the surreal and abstract designs of the “witch dimensions” for the original series and the music will be handled by Takumi Ozawa who last worked on the “Divine Gate” series. Madoka was definitely a very unique take to the magical girl anime genre with a bunch of twists and turns you would really not expect, even with some very shocking results, I cannot see this series as good as or better than the original but willing to see how this one will be turning out. Premieres on 01/05 and is exclusively streaming on Funimation Now and will be streaming on other platforms, including on Crunchyroll and VRV, a week later.
- Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi - Sorcerous Stabber Orphen — English Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m9S8wQ3SlE
This is a remake of an older fantasy series that was based off of light novels back in the mid 90’s which had an anime that originally aired back in early 1998 and had episodes until early 2000, I never seen any of the older series but now that it’s getting redone for current generation audiences I’m interested in giving it a solid shot. Studio J.C. Staff animated the earlier series but this time around it’s being done by Studio Deen, more known for working on the “Konosuba” series and recently handling the newest season of “Seven Deadly Sins” and it’s coming from the director of “Appleseed XIII”. I know anime based on fantasy light novels are all the rage in this day and age but this one is based off of one of the earliest ones before the whole light novel “boom” started and hopefully will be a fun trip to watch but I’m not really expecting too much greatness out of it, now if only we can get a reboot of “The Slayers” then that would be awesome. Premieres on 01/07 and is streaming on Funimation Now and Hulu.
- Ishuzoku (Interspecies) Reviewers — Japanese Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpveDH9E--g
Here’s another adaptation of yet another JRPG-like fantasy series and this one is all about learning the ins and outs of various species that work in this world’s “red light district”, that’s right: “isekai prostitutes”! Hellz yeah! \m/ Alright, this one is really not going to be a total award winner here but I can more or less see this one as a dumb & fun, turn off your brain and stare at tig-ol-bitties type of show and I’m cool with that, and crossing my fingers I get access to the uncensored versions of the episodes cuz the TV broadcast will be. It’s being animated by studio Passione whom did “Rokka no Yuusha” and “Rail Wars!” a while back and it’s coming from the director of “FLCL Progressive” (bleh!) yet also it’s from the same anime adaptor as “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” so that’s a plus. Premieres on 01/04 and is streaming on Funimation Now and Hulu.
- Plunderer — English Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbuNKI4SQ0s
Funimation has been hyping this one up for a while, I believe since Anime Expo last July, and it’s based on a manga series where everyone has a number called a “count” and they can stand for anything like miles walked, animals killed, girls f**ked, etc. and if your “count” drops to zero you then will be sent to the “abyss” and the main character is named Licht Bach whom is a “plunderer” of peoples numbers? Honestly the story is extremely vague and I don’t have much details about it in English but for yet another fantasy-style show I guess it’s worth a try. The series is also created by Suu Minazuki whom is better known for the “Sora no Otoshimono” or “Heaven’s Lost Property” series, which I have never seen yet seems to be highly fanservice-driven. It’s animated by studio Geek Toys whom does not have a stellar track record at all (did you see “Rerided?” I didn’t think so) and it’s from the director of “Oreimo: My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute”. Premieres on 01/09 and is streaming on Funimation Now and Hulu.
- Heya Camp — Japanese Teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3C66twy5Mw
First off if you have not seen “Yuru Camp” then SHAME ON YOU! It’s one of the most cute, fun and wholesome slice-of-life series you will ever see and honestly watching these cutie girls go on camping trips in the Japanese mountain outskirts is a real sight to see. Sadly this is not the second anime season of the series, although that is planned in the near future, and these are very short episodes, I believe only five-ish minute-long ones based off of the 4-koma bonus panels of the manga series. But hey(a), I loved the original series and seeing more of my camping girls is always a plus and will gladly be giving this a go. Studio C-Station is animating it but it’s not coming from the director nor writers of the earlier anime. Premieres on 01/06 but no legal streaming is planned (betting on Crunchyroll)
- Isekai Quartet 2 — Japanese Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFHc0L87Z2g
First off if you have not watched all available TV episodes and movies of the following Kadokawa “isekai” series then DO NOT WATCH this show: “Konosuba”, “Re:Zero”, “Overlord”, “The Saga of Tanya the Evil” and “Rising of the Shield Hero”. Now if you have watched all of those series then either you will be getting a funny kick out of this damn silly, super deformed show or get more moans and groans out of it. Actually this anime should be the “Isekai Quintet”, hey now! The original series is, deep down, highly stupid but I did get a kick out of seeing the interactions of all of the various series characters and what situations they will get into and now with the main “Shield Hero” characters getting into the school class mix who knows what the hell’s gonna happen. I’m not going to expect this any better than the last but it’s just something that perks my curiosity and everyone that worked on the past series is working on this one. Premieres on 01/15 and is streaming on Funimation Now, Hulu, Crunchyroll and VRV.
** Lastly, while these both technically had their world premieres late last year: GKids Films will be releasing Makoto Shinkai’s “Weathering With You” in U.S. theaters on January 17th and Eleven Arts will be releasing Keiichi Hara’s “The Wonderland” (originally as “Birthday Wonderland” in Japan), which feature characters designed by famed Russian anime artist Ilya Kuvshinov, in U.S. theaters on January 31st.

Subs VS Dubs
I'm going to end this war... Maybe?
So, basically I understand that people who watch subs are people who pay full attention to their anime, and love the beautiful language the Japanese speak. But, there are reasons to not like or enjoy subs, for example young kids who cannot read properly, people who have dyslexia, or don't have the subtitles in their language, or artists who can't pay full attention to the subtitles, but not just artists also if someone's doing some sort of written/typed-out work who want to just listen, and some people just dislike subs because they prefer their own language which is fine it's just not your everyday weeb. But, don't worry my fellow sub-peeps, I have an excuse for you too. People who have the time to pay full attention to the subtitled episodes may be learning this language which you should respect that wish, instead of putting it down with a simple "Dubs are better". People who watch subbed anime's are enjoying the beauty of the unique language and may be learning to speak it or even be a voice actor. Whatever the reason maybe, don't put it down.
So, you see I only watch subbed anime's but a friend of mine watch's both subs and dubs such as watching Boku no hero academia in dub, and kuroshitsuji in sub, so I decided to take her points of view. If you have a different reason, then don't be afraid to comment down below what your reason.
