First step on stage

Hi everyone! Or at least, everyone who's bothered to have a look at my blog for whatever reason. I thought I'd kick things off with my recent IRL activities. University is just about to start up for the year where I am, so naturally my schedule has been a bit more active than usual. I think I've spent most of the past couple of days just wanting to have some free time to myself. My wish was finally granted today, so I thought I would watch some more episodes of Oreimo, a series I have grown very fond of. It's characters, the simple little moments it en captures in a High Schooler's life leave me with a sense of thorough enjoyment, and sadly, emptiness. It may be fictional, but some series have a habit of creating the very things we wish we had in our lives, like friends who have an honest emotional connection. It's ironic that after spending a good amount of time wishing I was alone, I now want nothing more than to be with someone I care about. But I have no intention of leaving my first ever blog post on such a depressing note. Series like Oreimo exist because such bonds of affection exist and are possible for everyone, no matter who we might be as individuals. If you've bothered to read this far, then congratulations because I know I type a little too much. And look out for further posts in the future. Take care, J'khan.

I won't be mentioning every title since there were lots I'd never heard of and lots most people don't care about. Anyways, as a whole, this season looks boring. There is simply nothing interesting or fresh enough to grab my attention. There are no sequels I'm looking forward to and lots of fan service, as expected. But, who knows?, maybe a few surprises will come up. Firstly, there are two shows that, um, promote pedophilia? Super Lovers and Shounen Maid both have a young bishounen next to a creepy older guy. Seriously, this is disgusting. There is also the usual crop of light novel adaptations - The Asterisk War Season 2, a show a gamer girl with a ridiculously long title, Re:Zero and Hundred, none of which I'm looking forward to. At least there's not as many as last fall. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress airs this season and it looks pretty mediocre. I don't like the idea of Wit Studio making shows about monsters, see Seraph of the End and Attack on Titan. Hopefully they'll pull something decent out of their hat one of these years but it's not likely. Next, there is Space Patrol Luluco and Kiznaiver, both of which are made by Trigger. They're probably hit or miss but at least they'll have some sort of style, even if there's no substance. There is also JoJo's Bizzare Adventure: Part 4. I understand why some people find it appealing but I just can't enjoy it. It's just trying to be sensational and different, adding lots of muscular men to a very...bizzare, nonsensical story. The music is great but it just doesn't arouse my interests. Bones is making two action shows this year. Adapted from manga, My Hero Academia and Bungou Stray Dogs both look interesting. Again, I have some doubts because Bones isn't exactly the greatest studio out there but at least they'll probably make entertaining series. I guess I'll predict Joker Game as AOTS thus far. Finally there's a show adapted from an actual novel. It might be hit or miss because it's made by Production I.G but at least I have hope in it. Also, it takes place during World War II and has spies, which doesn't happen often in anime.

Anime In Review: Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo

Ten days ago, I completed Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo. (Season 1 and OAD 1-2) I very much enjoyed this show. It was very well done all throughout. To begin with, I discovered this show by looking up a list of "gender swap" anime, and this was one of the shows it listed. I thought, "pretty neat." I saw a gif of Shiraishi (well, really it was Yamada-kun in Shiraishi's body) shaking back and forth. It looked cute, so I decided to give it a watch. And what a watch it was. First off, this was a similar case to Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate, where my expectations were something, and what I got was something else - but I loved it! I first thought, "Okay, this show is about a guy who turns into a girl and has to deal with the situations that come from it". But what actually happens is that he swaps bodies with a girl at school! It's an interesting concept, and they definitely took full advantage of it in this show. More to come on that later. In the beginning, you meet Yamada Ryu, a token bad-boy, breaks-all-the-rules type kid. And then you meet Shiraishi, a token plays-by-the-rules, does-everything-right type girl. And then, due to a freak accident, Yamada and Shiraishi end up switching bodies. Now, can I just say, before I get more into this, that I think Shiraishi's character is amazing. When I first saw her, I thought, "Oh geez, this is going to be a typical girl that gets angry at Yamada for not doing anything right, and then it might develop into a tsundere-like relationship." But no! I find it hilarious how NOTHING phases Shiraishi. When she finds that their bodies have switched, she doesn't panic or get angry, or even try to switch back! She just goes into class as Yamada and starts doing his work! xD That part had me in stitches. She's like that throughout the whole show. She has such a calm demeanor, almost nothing phases her. She'll always go along with whatever crazy antic Yamada or Ito-san or Miyamura is doing. You'll see the action, and then you'll see Shiraishi in Yamada's body sitting back, reading a book or doing her schoolwork. It's the best ever! I love her character. Now, going back to the story, I just want to say that I love this concept. When Yamada kisses someone, he swaps bodies with that person. SO many body-swap cartoons get this wrong, where they'll have the voices swap with the character so as not to confuse the audience. BUT in this show, the voices stay with the body, just like in real life. And you'd think that it would make it confusing to follow, like "Who's in Shiraishi's body right now? Her or Yamada?" BUT NO! The voice actors do such a fantastic job of being the other characters that you can tell right away, eliminating the confusion. It's brilliant! Seriously, those voice actors should win an award for that. Here, let me just look up who does Shiraishi... Okay, Saori Hayami. She should get an Emmy for that performance. Her "Yamada" voice is just so perfect! God, they all do such great jobs with their performance! Okay, so back to the show. I liked how Yamada cares for Shiraishi and helped her out with her bullying problem. That was sweet. Throughout the series, we're introduced to a whole slew of characters - Miyamura, Ito, Odagiri, Tsubaki, Otsuka, Sarushima, Noa, Asuka, Rika Saionji, Ushio, Tamaki. They're all great. (although, why is Ushio's hairstyle so similar to Miyamura's?) Now, remember how I said they take full advantage of all that stuff? Well, they utilize everyone's witch power and it can get pretty insane. Shiraishi's is body swap. Odagiri's is charm. Sarushima's is seeing the future. Noa's is seeing the past. (She's so fricking cute!) Otsuka's is telepathy. (And might I just say that she's cute too!) Asuka's, stolen by Tamaki, is invisibility. And Saionji's is memory erasing. I thought Odagiri was a great character. From the beginning, you see that she thinks she has all the cards, but actually gets attracted to Yamada and even in the end, still carries a torch for him. That's why I thought it was really sweet when she gets her memories back, and Yamada says he's really glad that someone remembers him. I thought it was really cute that this meant so much to her. I kinda ship OdagirixYamada, so... Odada? Yamagiri? That's 1 of 3 ships, though. Noa is an adorable loli girl. She's sooooo cute, and when Yamada stood up for her to try and get to the bottom of this witch thing, she develops feelings for him. Ohmigosh, when she was holding onto his shoulder and would not let go at the end of that one episode, I was SCREAMING internally at how cute it was. I really hoped their relationship would develop more, but sadly, it doesn't get much further. I am SO in favor of ship NoaxYamada. Noada. I thought it was hilarious how Asuka just frickin' roundhouse kicks anyone who tries to come near the student council president. When Yamada tried to steal a kiss, she just FUCKING breaks his skull, like immediately. It was hilarious. I don't even think we ever see her use invisibility, though. Huh. Anyway, as for Rika Saionji, oh boy. [TO BE CONTINUED]

Seriously disliking Saito right now.

I know Louise is a complete and utter bitch to Saito but if he himself has confessed his love to her and damn well knows that she loves him back (why else would she get jealous? Why else would she kiss him? Honestly, he can't be that thick and not know that her 'just because you're my familiar' claims actually go deeper than that) And after that incident with Tiffania ('reluctantly' fondling her breasts and what not) he KNEW that that sort of crap hurt Louise. Okay? He KNEW. He even said himself! So what this is mainly about is, what the hell was that with Henrietta? What the actual f*ck?! Why did he go in for the kiss? He knew stuff like that hurt Louise, so why did he do it? Well it's beyond me considering that shit was never explained! I'll let the first kiss go (when Henrietta was disguised as Louise, which, proves that Henrietta is the exact bitch I see her as) but the second? Nope. Saito SAW Henrietta but still went in for it! That, my friend, is f*cked up. I seriously wanted to cry, I felt really bad for Louise. And whilst Louise is running away in absolute despair of seeing her lover about to lock lips with her goddamn friend, the f*cking idiot Saito yells 'Wait Louise! It's not what you think!" I'm sorry, what was that Saito? You're saying that 'it's not what you think!' ? Well sorry to rain on your parade but it was EXACTLY WHAT YOU'D THINK! You and your lowlife self was about to smooch the queen in her own physical form! So stop bullshitting us there, Saito. Sure, Louise is annoying and if Saito thinks that, don't tell the girl you love her and then go and almost kiss her friend! And he cannot say that 'they're not offical' or 'I don't know if she loves me' In earlier episodes he literally said to himself that shit like that hurts Louise! So what the f*ck? It pisses me off. Sorry about that. About to watch the fourth season. I hope it gets better or else I'm rating it a 3. Not kidding. This unfaithfulness crap is doing my head in.

"Firewatch" Impressions

** "Firewatch" for PS4 Impressions ** (Also, this is my 200th MAL blog post! Holy shit!!) Developed by - Campo Santo (debut) Directed by - Jake Rodkin (worked on many Telltale adventure games like "The Walking Dead", "Sam & Max" and "Tales of Monkey Island") What Wiki Says: Firewatch takes place in the Wyoming wilderness in 1989. Players take on the role of Henry (voiced by Rich Sommer of "Mad Men" fame), a fire lookout who is assigned to his own tower in Shoshone National Forest. Through exploration of the surrounding area, Henry uncovers clues about mysterious occurrences in the vicinity that are related to the ransacking of his tower while out on a routine patrol and a shadowy figure that occasionally appears watching him from afar. Henry's only form of communication is a walkie-talkie connecting him to his supervisor, Delilah (voiced by Cissy Jones). Players may choose from a number of dialog options to interact with her when players discover new interactive objects or environments, or refrain from responding. The player's choices will influence the tone of Henry's relationship with Delilah. As the story progresses, new areas will be opened up for players. The game also features a day-night cycle, but time will only shift if players successfully complete all the objectives set for that period of time. What I Say: This is what the gaming community calls a "walking simulator" where there is hardly much interaction with the player and the story is progressed as the player explores more into the game's enviroment. Yet this is really one "walking simulator" that just needs to be experienced at least once even if the game is not much on the lenghty side and the story is kind of mediocre. Right off the bat, just when you first step foot onto the Wyoming forest, the game's greatest highlight is just how amazing the graphics and surroundings look and everything has a very bright, artistic look to it, it's almost very "Journey"-ish in a sense. As each day progresses you get the see the park's landscape at different daytimes and each area during these times are very eye popping, almost makes you want to take out a camera and snap pictures, in fact you do get a disposible camera you can use which your photos are then shown during the game's credits. There isn't much in terms of action or puzzle solving, plus you cannot die or fail in the game, although the game's world does have a very, very slight "metroid-vania" feel to it where some areas cannot be accessed until you have equiped the right tools in order to access that area. Other than the game's colorful graphics and second best highlight are your conversations with Delilah over the walkie-talkie and it's pretty fun to just hear what she says after you come across practically anything that is out of the ordinary, especially where you find a couple girl teen's clothes, bras and panties as they are skinny dipping in a nearby lake. Also Delilah is definately not your average ordinary girl-next-door type and personally she's got some big balls for the crap she can say over the radio. There are a couple negative points to the game though, first on the PS4 version the game does get into some snags and hangs when you explore the various park areas due to the game loading each section and does become annoying at some parts while it's fairly smooth in others. The developers recently released a patch that supposely made this happen less during the game but makes me wonder how bad the inital release was. The second downer are the loading times between day transitions and they can usually run from 30 seconds to about a minute and it's kind of surprizing for a game that I don't think is all that massive in size. Speaking of size, the game's download is roughly 6 gigs with updates even though the PSN store states 3.2. The game will take you about 4 to 5 hours to get through on your first run and any playthrough you do will earn you all of the game trophies on the PS4 version (actually, there's only 5 of them), however it is replayable due to the fact that you have choices in your dialogs as well as in the beginning portion of the game. Personally I don't think the story was really all that intense and rememberable although it can get a bit sad and depressing as times and sadly you really don't see or get up close to any massive forest fires in the game (although the areas do get really smokey in the last portion). However, overall I did really enjoy the game's very picturescue enviroments and the quirky and colorfull conversations between Henry and Delilah and is one nature trip that should be taken at least once but personally I think once is just enough. I rate it 4 stars on PSN. It's available for PC, Mac OS, Linux and of course the Playstation 4 for $20.

(Spoilers!) Top 7 Saddest Anime Scenes IMO!

$
0
0
Now guys, if you learn anything after becoming an anime fan it's that noone has the exact same opinion as you, so I apologize if my decisions seem stupid to you. Now let's get started on my top saddest anime scenes. And remember.... SPOILER ALERT 7) Suzuha Amane committing suicide in Steins;Gate Ok, maybe this one might be the tiniest bit very biased because this bad-donkey was my favorite character of the series. But anyone can admit that although it wasn't the saddest scene ever, the scene where Okabe Rintarou reads the note from Suzuha talking about how she failed was at least a tearjerker. No, it didn't make me cry, but somehow this scene still struck me, both in the dub and sub runthrough 6) The students leave Purgatory in Angel Beats Angel Beats! is an anime known for being sad, and in a relatively rushed anime, i still found myself looking depressed at the infamous empty screen of a season finale as Otonashi fell to the ground trying to hug Tenshi, the girl he loved, as she disappeared. 5)Lelouch Sacrifices himself for World Peace in Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion R2 Code Geass is world renowned as a top tier anime. But not many people who haven't watched it don't know that at times, it was actually a real tearjerker. Lelouch, the protagonist, purposely does bad acts at the end to get the entire world to hate him, so they would unite together and to stop the monarch. In doing so, he knows he will be assassinated, AND loses the love from his friends and family. The world unites to kill him, and as he dies, he hopes that as the world united to fight him, maybe the world would unite forever. 4) Kaoris surgery fails and she dies in Your Lie In April Alongside One Punch Man, the new series Erased, and many other notable animes (Charlotte, Plastic Memories etc.) many people consider this anime to be one of the best in recent times. The show follows a young, right-off-the-sheet pianist who cannot hear the piano anymore because of a tragic pyschological event when his mom died when he was young. He meets a young girl, Kaori, who loves to perform to her hearts content, flowing with freedom and integrity, much to the opposition of the young man Kouseis rigid style. She helps him get into the music world again, but ends up dying in surgery during his Piano Recital finals. 3) Nagisa and Ushio die in Clannad: After Story If you walk up to an anime fan who has watched a good amount, and ask him what the saddest show is, I guarantee at least half the time, the answer is always this one anime, Clannad: Afterstory. Even a simple overview will still make someone feel bad. The first season is mostly happy, building up characters, and the main OTP, Okazaki and Nagisa. Then of course, in season 2, Nagisa has a baby and her frail body fails on her and she dies. The man gives the baby, Ushio to the moms parents, depressed. She is introduced back into his life, and as soon as happiness reenters his life, she dies in his arms on a trip. Sad, right? And at least the side characters get happy back-stories... oh wait. 2) Menma disappears in Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day One of the first sad animes ive watched, Anohana was a true masterpiece. Yes, it followed one straight boring line to a predictable ending with nothing but frustrating characters crying in their rooms leading up to it (if you're that against this show) But the ending... that was such an emotional scene as they scream for her to come back as she disappears from their views. 1) Rolo Lamperouge sacrifices himself for his brother Lelouch in Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion R2 Now this will be the one that gets people mad. I don't know why... This is a scene that people cheered for, yet somehow i was left crying, my heart shattered as i even quit the show for a while. He was an annoying character to some, and a useless one to others, but for those who haven't seen this show, i will give you his backstory. He was a young boy with the power to freeze peoples state in time for a couple of seconds at a time. He never got to feel the love and warmth of a family, and was used more as a tool rather than a human being all his life. He is assigned to pretend to be Lelouch's fake brother, as Lelouch lost his memory (and actually had a sister Nunnally, who is now gone, so he is sent in as a fake replacement) He at first finds it another assignment, ready to kill Lelouch if he needed, but because Lelouch had his mind washed, he actually believed Rolo was his brother, and even gave Rolo his sister Nunnallys charm for his birthday, which was the first time he ever felt love. He eventually loved the feeling of having someone look at him as a human being so much that he left the government and just became his brother. Lelouch then gains his memory back, and yells at Rolo, telling him he despises him, and wants his sister back. The charm he gave Rolo is shattered, and so is Rolos emotions. Lelouch is then about to be killed by a force of over 100 people later, but Rolo comes in and somehow manages to freeze all of them, overworking his heart in the process. Lelouch asks why he would do this for someone who hated him and Rolo responds that even though he (Lelouch) hates him now, Rolo still enjoyed all the time he spent, and that he finally got to be treated like a human being. He says that he would like to thank Lelouch because "even though i was treated like a tool all my life, because of you... I can finally make my last decision... as a human being" before killing the final forces and collapsing from exhaustion. Lelouch then accepts him as a brother, and holds him a proper funeral, even leaving Nunnallys charm on his grave. Well thats my top 7 folks! It was fun writing this and i hope you enjoyed it!

An Informal Analysis & Review of Banner of the Stars (anime) (all seasons) (major spoilers)

$
0
0
If the title wasn't clear enough, this is not a standard anime review. This is a light, informal examination of various elements in Banner of the Stars and how they interact. If you think you might be interested in this series and have some questions, you would be much better off by simply asking me about it. If you read this blog post, you're going to get your butt spoiled on very significant plot points throughout the whole series. If you don't want to weaken the experience for yourself, don't even read the next paragraph. You were warned. Banner of the Stars is a coming of age space opera. Unlike most of its contemporaries, the greater narrative follows the story of the "alien invaders", the Abh. Within this narrative context exists Jinto, a young man who upon the conquering of his homeworld becomes, through treaty agreements, becomes Abh nobility. His counterpart throughout the series is Lafiel, a young Abh in line for the royal succession of the Empire. A great deal of focus is placed on the Abh culture and how it relates to other cultures, especially in the first and third seasons. This is significant to the understanding of the story because of how heavily it influences both Jinto's and Lafiel's perspectives of their universe, as well as the other cultures of the setting. Perhaps the initial and most notable trait of the Abh culture is its dominating, exploratory nature. As mentioned previously, the Abh are a in many senses a control-oriented culture. After breakthroughs in genetic modification that lead to the original Abhs, said original Abhs split from the human race shortly after their initial slave-imposed commission to explore the universe, having discovered of a method to break the light speed limit. Although the Terrans (non-genetically modified humans) who owned these Abh were killed to bring this about, the original Abh vowed to protect the culture and customs of those Terrans who died in honor of them. Fast forward an indeterminate hundreds or thousands of years later, and the Humankind Abh Empire is still focused on exploring and controlling space. They have little care for managing surface worlds, and often come off as arrogant due to their matter-of-fact, direct speech when addressing such worlds. This, combined with their genetic differences and their extreme loyalty to their superiors, leads them to be hated by most Terrans, many of whom claim they aren't even human anymore. What most Terrans don't understand, and what is explored most heavily in the second season, is that aside from their extreme loyalty to the empire and and their preservation of culture, individual Abh have highly varied personalities, desires, and goals, just like normal humans do. Some are quiet, others are loud, and some are eccentric. Some even struggle with their ingrained respect for authority. And, perhaps most surprisingly to a Terran, they are all capable of love. It is with this context in mind that one must realize that Jinto is separated from his homeworld's culture at a young age, roughly ten years old, and due to his nobility he is in many ways ostracized by the broader Terran cultures. This leaves him confused through most of his teenage years as to whether he belongs with Terrans, or with Abhs. It is through the peculiarity that he is ostracized and treated differently by his culture that he is able to share a unique bond with Lafiel: Lafiel, being royal, is treated as an authority, and therefore is in many sense ostracized and treated differently by her own culture as well. Of course, there are further issues both in the larger narrative context and with the main duo. The non-Abh interstellar nations of the Banner of the Stars universe, motivated by their hatred for the Abh, try to set them up for wrongdoings they haven't committed, which leads to war. Thus the figurative opposition of cultural concepts is made literal, and affects both Jinto and Lafiel not only in relationship, but also in circumstance. This serves to bring out their immaturity and weaknesses, and balance each other out in ways that would not occur if they were isolated. It is through this balancing and refining of each other that they grow more mature and more confident in themselves. They both become more responsible in their own way, Jinto becomes more dependable, and Lafiel becomes less reckless. Banner of the Stars then chooses to use this newfound maturity to link the narrative context to the individual context. It is through choosing against their own cultures and for each other that they are able to begin to unite the two cultures. Where Lafiel surrenders her pride as a royal, Jinto surrenders any hope of being understood by his people. In the end, they must become to each other what has been left as a void for both: a home. Naturally, the actual presentation of this is far more elegant than dry explanatory text may make it seem-- the usage of language itself, in particular, be it Baronh (the Abh language) or Martinese (Jinto's native tongue), is used to highlight the unity of the two even at the very, very end of their journey... The result of all of these elements is an organic relationship that has significance both on the macro and micro level, an excellent romance with nary an "I love you" or significant outward intimacy. It all comes together splendidly. If you ignored my warning and haven't seen the series, maybe give it a try. It might surprise you.

Inspiring Anime Quote #4

Quote #4:"Fake people have an image to maintain. Real people just don't care". Anime: My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Character who says the quote: Hachiman Hikigaya One of the more popular high school romance animations that gets a lot of attention nowadays is My Teen Romantic SNAFU which takes a rather refreshing direction by having its main character be somebody who has a more realistic look on the common high school life. This series pretty much takes your favorite "life is perfect" romance anime and spits on it in the most interesting way possible. Sometimes I really wish this animation had been released back when I was in that area of school because it would have probably saved me the anxiety of ever wanting to fit in or at least provide the right knowledge in knowing that I shouldn't have wanted the same romantic "happiness" other students had. For me, I was a theater student so my entire "amazing high school experience" was just competing against other students for big acting roles while having hateful eyes glared at me if I managed to succeed. Most of all the groups that I'd be surrounded by would be full of total fakes who would wear their wealth as a mask instead of ever being upfront about their own insecurities. I remember having the dumbest of crushes and really believing the girls who I liked were just so "wonderful" when in reality they were pretty much the best description of spoiled trash that you could find in this world. Although, I don't necessarily want those memories deleted either as it was a growing experience for me and helped my thought process in understanding what exactly I should be looking for when it comes to meeting the right girl. Also, one of the coolest things about this quote is that it applies way past school as well! The fact is, people of all different ages are trying to maintain an "image" of sorts instead of just being themselves. Its not wrong to necessarily maintain a professional image for work but this quote is more applying to people who figure they need to "be part of the crowd" in order to survive when they should be focusing more on not caring about that to begin with. Even now I will read posts from people who are actually ashamed to be playing video games or liking animation. If that is something you are actually passionate about then..why care? If anything, plenty of people are doing you a favor by making it insanely obvious that you shouldn't be around them if they would reject you for that. The last thing you ever want to do when having doubts about yourself is creating a facade that does not reflect a single fragment of your heart.
