How are scores calculated?
Despite the seemingly crazy score numbers, my scoring method isn't very complex.
Story + Characters = 70%, equal 35% for each. Each are given a number between 1 and 10, and are not always integers (sometimes include a decimal point, such as 7.4)
Presentation = 15%, 7.5% for each sound + animation. Numbers given for each will ALWAYS be integers, meaning a solid number with no decimal points. Between 1 and 10, obviously.
The Five Questions = 15% total.
1. How well did this anime do at introducing new things, leading to less tropes and a fresher feel? 3%
2. How well did the series get by the point that it intended to get by, meaning how well did it leave a final message to us as viewers without anything getting in the way of that? 3%
3. How well was the series adapted from its original source material?* 3%
4. How well was fanservice handled in this series?** 3%
5. How well were characters that deserved attention given it? 3%
If it did so very well, given a 3.
If it did so kind of well or only did at times, given a 2.
If it did so poorly, given a 1.
If it didn't do so at all, given a 0.
Final scores are tallied up, and given a percentage which is then applied to the final score.
* If series was not adapted from anything specific (aka an anime original), automatically given a full 3. If the series was adapted from something that I haven't given any/enough attention to, automatically given a full 3. The latter option is usually very rare, as I'll almost always read a volume of a manga/novel before digging into the anime for said manga/novel.
** It says how well fanservice was HANDLED, meaning a series can have lots of fanservice and still be given a 3. If the fanservice is found to be necessary, such as to show the relationship between two characters, that's proper handling and thus deserving of a high score.
Here's an example.
Monogatari Series: Second Season -
Story:
The main selling point of the Monogatari Series is its unique way of storytelling. What started off so strongly in Bake+Nisemonogatari continues were in the Second Season: telling multiple short stories that tie together into a very deep and fulfilling large story. There is a small problem with how characters are dealt with when hopping from one story to another, but overall I see no reason why the story aspect of Monogatari S2 isn't close to perfect. 9.5
Characters:
If the story of the Monogatari series didn't get to you, the characters are definitely what will. What we're given in Bakemonogatari is a slew of characters with amazing personalities that we felt could never be outmatched... until now. The characters that we loved in Bakemonogatari come back to life, and are even better, here in Monogatari S2. There's also a couple of extremely good characters that are introduced later on that make the characters of this terrific series even better. I see no reason not to give the character section of Monogatari S2 a 10.
Presentation:
The soundtrack stood out slightly more than it does for usual anime to me, but at the same time was nothing too amazing. However, as I don't put a high value into soundtracks, this didn't affect my enjoyment of the series in even the slightest. However, when looking at it from a critical perspective, it does. Still good, but nothing too amazing. 8
The art style takes everything we loved about the art of Bake+Nisemonogatari, and makes it even better. Besides the obvious ufotable Fate series adaptations, Monogatari S2 takes a close 2nd for best animation I've ever seen in any anime ever. 10
The Five Questions:
1. The Monogatari series has always been flawless at introducing new things and giving us a fresh experience. Monogatari S2 is no different. 3
2. This is a small problem with the Monogatari series. There's never a specific message to be left at the very end of watching this series. Though this has been helped greatly, there still isn't a big bold message left out that everyone will be able to see. 2
3. I have only read one volume of Bakemonogatari, which was fan-translated and not very well due to the extremely unique writing style of Nisio Isin. While I think Bakemonogatari was given a superb adaptation from what I read, I don't think I've read quite enough to give this a proper judgment. 3
4. The Monogatari series, especially Nisemonogatari, has always been slightly infamous for its fanservice. This is handled much better here in S2, though still does exist at unnecessary times. 3
5. Every character is given a short story, and none are left out. 3
The Five Questions: 14
Final score: 9.575
Rounded: 9.58
