Since I wrote a blog on the last season as well as some previous ones, I thought I'd type this up as well. For one thing though, I am grateful to say that the Spring 2013 >>>>>>>>> the shitty Winter 2013 Season. Among many shows, there were definitely quite a few that were worth mentioning and enjoyable to watch, some mediocre, while others are shit and should of been dropped. Well, I rarely drop shows anyways but here goes...this blog contains what I personally thought of the Spring 2013 season:
Excellence
Hataraku Maou-sama! I said it before and I'll say it again, this series just makes my every Thursday full of joy with its hilarious sequences. The story isn't exactly top notch but the execution and its humor sure is for me. At first I didn't pay much attention to this show (even though I do follow the manga and its spinoff). However, after the first episode, I was HOOKED. It's just that damn funny and potential for comedy of the season. Shame this is over and I hope for a season 2 in the future. WHITE FOX for president. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru The first episode was kinda dull but I quickly caught interest after I noticed the character interactions of this series. Rather, the main male protagonist Hachiman is one of the most interesting characters of the season with his monologues. This is an example of his very long monologue regarding: "I hate nice girls":
As one of the few romantic comedies that pulls off such an elegant atmosphere in that slice of life tone, this series is worth every second and in the end gave me enough impressions to score this a 9/10. Shingeki no Kyojin This series is obviously the most hyped up anime of the season and I won't be surprised if year as well. Anyways, the first episode impressed me the most out of any show this entire year. The show itself is very faithful to its manga so I'm pleased to see that. There's some stills problems and animation production quality issues here and there but it can easily be trumped by its superior soundtrack. The characters are also quite pleasing to watch as well for me and among my favorites are Levi, Potato Girl, and Mikasa. This show deserves the hype imo and I hope it doesn't fuck up later on. Suisei no Gargantia Well, what do we have here, another of Urobutcher Gen's new anime? Well, he seems to take a slightly different approach this time doesn't he? Anyways, this show is something of an elegant sight to watch and I just love the spectacular battle sequences along with that superior animation from this series. Ledo also seems to be an interesting character and I like his way of development as each episodes progresses through the interactions he has with the others. Ooh and Chamber is the best fucking Tin Can/Robo character in this show. Hands down. I'll watch the OVA later this year as well. Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S Well, this show is something I have been looking forward to all year long. As a fan of the manga and Railgun, I was pleased with what's shown so far. It's nice to know that J.C. Staff is adapting the Sister's Arc and following it faithfully to its manga. There's some fillers here and there but it's tolerable for me. Oh and Accelerator makes his epic debut in episode 5 that pleases me greatly. There's ITEM too! with Fre nda and another level 5 esper introduced. This show is what I like to call the superior branch of the sequels this season, much better than...*cough* Samurai Bride. Yuyushiki It's not just cute, it's Yuyushiki! But in seriousness, this series is too cute. I think I might die of moe if this show ran for another season. Rather though, it's quite a pleasant watch and I want more seasons with Yui and her adorable friends!
Decent
Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. No, this is a hentai. What it is though is a rather new romantic comedy from the Spring 2013 lineup that can be described as: weird, cute, and adorable all the same time. Anyways, don't expect too much from this but it bought me a lot of warm fuzzy feeling inside. Oh and the cast is adorable especially with the way Tsukiko eating and bouncing around on and about. Oh and there's the best girl Azusa, the cool chick Steel King, and among others. Youto you lucky bastard. Kakumeiki Valvrave I probably shouldn't put this series into the decent category especially after some trainwreck episodes. However, I am a mecha fan and surprisingly, this show entertained me in many ways than I had thought. Oh and when I was watching it on CR, it required me to log in to confirm age...lol. Ye, this series is controversial especially later on. Well, I can't say I'm surprised though consider Sunrise is involved. I'll tune in for the 2nd season in October to see what's going to go down. Oh and Akira's VVV is epic. L-elf's a pro. Karneval I actually thought this was decent. I'm not sure why but this show is refreshing to look forward to each week. Well, the pacing isn't as good as I had thought and somewhat confusing to watch as the plot goes out everywhere. Still as a manga fan and follower, I did enjoy Karneval in a way.
Meh
RDG: Red Data Girl I don't have much to add to this but I basically forced myself to finish this series. Otherwise, the elegant Japanese atmosphere and the calm setting gave me some pleasure. Date a Live Alright, so I've read the LN so I finished this but what the fuck is up with the ending? Anyways, I gave this a meh but it's dangerously close to the shit zone. The characters are generic as hell and so is the premise. The 'dating premise' is obviously there but it just takes a twist and formulates it into a dating sim scenario. Only the catch is that it involves saving the world LOL. Oh and 2nd season have been confirmed... Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge I should probably put this into the shit category but as a manga fan, I thought to be slightly more generous. At any rate, Crime Edge has a solid premise but shit execution with its setting, story, and characters. Oh and they never actually kiss (as in Iwai and Kiri). Also, the final episode pretty much solved nothing and shamelessly tries to rush the series through its premise. The execution is weak anyways. Well, if there's one thing though, the OST is nice to listen to and the animation gives off that fantasy outlook... Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince It's not absolute trash but this series pissed me off. It looked to me like some sort of Gundam Seed clone but without as much as seriousness as I had anticipated. The characters' designs also pissed me off as well as the pacing. So far, there's only been about 2-3 episodes of action. The rest just feels out of space. This show is dropping the ball but I hope the second half will be better. [b Devil Survivor 2 The Animation The first episode was great! It gave me one of the better impressions of the spring lineup but what the fuck happened after? Slow pacing, mess of a story, shock factors that makes little sense, and characters thrown everywhere with no development. I haven't played the games yet but I am definitely not going to now. I still follow the manga though so hoping for a change in its execution later on. Ooh and I can't take Hibiki's fucking hood seriously at all. Aiura For a short anime, this was actually okay but still lacks flavor. I guess the problem would be the time interface. Otherwise, it's cute but lacks entertainment enough that it could of been rated higher. Mushibugyou Recent episodes have been better but the beginning was a snooze for me. Oh and fan service is much more than I had thought. Well, historical theme series aren't really my thing so not too surprised this turned out to be meh so far. I do hope for the better though. Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san For a 12 minute anime, this wasn't something I had originally planned to watch. Otherwise, it has some fun moments but ultimately didn't click too well with me. Well, it's only 12 episodes so go figure.
Bad/Shit
Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 2000% Cecil is my favorite from the series. Everyone else is pretty much dull along with the entire series. They should also use a different song for once ffs. The series is boring although a few of the songs are catchy. The ending also seemed to be so predictable that I might as well just skip to the final few minutes. Oh and they used the same song in the finale as well for STARISH's performance... Aku no Hana I thought I'd like this series but turns out otherwise. Aku no Hana rubbed me wrong beyond just its rotoscoped animation that seemed to be one of the biggest shitstorms of the season. This is just my opinion though but as a fan of the manga, this is beyond tolerable for me. Well, the atmosphere of the show fits with its style though as well as that creepy song played at the end of every episode. Otherwise, the pacing is horrid and the characters are barely likable except maybe Nakamura for me. I'll stick with the manga thanks. Finale also seem to hint a season 2 although it's unlikely considering Zexcs' history of not doing sequels. Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride Awful, just simply awful. This sequel is a disaster and I barely paid attention to it. Luckily I watched it uncensored on AT-X for giggles. PhotoKano I actually liked Amagami SS more than this. PhotoKano is about as shitty as I can imagine although I can't say I'm surprised. The MC lacks a personality and obliterates any sort of development between him and most of the female cast. Well, there's some development but way too short. Also from what I understand, some of the routes omitted material from the game. Otherwise, avoid this series but do watch for the giggity moments and fan service. Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W Besides the fun references, this was a chore to watch and it tries way too hard. I'm disappointed in this sequel and I regret finishing this. Oh and was there an actual kiss in this sequel? NOPE. Zettai Bouei Leviathan This series should of just been dropped from the beginning for me. I somehow was able to finish it though thanks to some action. Otherwise, I won't remember this one for a long time at all. Hayate no Gotoku! Cuties Even as a fan of the manga, this didn't appeal to me and ended up in this category. The Hinagiku episode was very pleasant to watch though but sadly not enough for me to fulfill enjoyment. A-Tan also needs more screen time along with Ruka-chan. I'll stick with the manga on this one rather than another season. Arata Kangatari I haven't read the manga and don't give a damn. This show is pretty dull and put me to sleep on a few occasions. It's nice to hear L-Elf's VA in this though but pretty boring at many occasions. I guess series like this just doesn't appeal to me. Cyclops Shoujo Saipuu This show is just retarded. I haven't read the manga and don't' care for it. The absurd amount of fan service also seems to be thrown everywhere with no purpose at all. Sparrow Hotel Honestly, just avoid this series. It's only 3 minute though so if you want to +1 to your anime list, it might be something. That's probably one of the better reasons to watch Sparrow Hotel. This show is just awful. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Mentions This group contains some special mentions of this season. Among one of them is the series known as Hunter x Hunter (2011) remake. This is probably one of the best battle shounens I've watched so far. Among the most interesting of arcs is the Yorknew involving the infamous Phantom Troupe. Man, that arc is just fucking epic and I like the dark themes of this show. The current Chimera Ant arc is also quite something to take interest on. I've written a blog on this and will be updating it weekly. But damn, HxH is something I should of started watching a long time ago. Among other specials is Saki: Achiga-hen - Episode of Side-A which I thought was decent but not too catchy. I guess I'm not a big fan of the Saki franchise so not too surprising.... Chihayafuru 2 Well, this is one of the few series that carried over to the Spring season from its horrid Winter lineup. I do admit some of the pacing is a bit slow but ultimately connected together very well. Karuta is something hard to master and I think the characters from this series pulled it off quite well. Also, it's nice to see two matches I had been waiting for a LONG time. The results were somewhat predictable but hell, I enjoyed Chihayafuru 2. I even want another season as well! Well, there's the OVA but still...guess I'm a bit greedy here but this definitely deserves some praise. So ya, this season is pretty much over but I am grateful to say that I enjoyed it. Among some of the two core series I'll be continuing watching into the Summer will be Railgun S, SnK, and Majestic Prince. I just hope they can keep up their ability to entertain me; not Majestic Prince though as I have little hopes for that right now. P.S.: I wonder if I forgot something.... P.S.2: Oh ya, there were Girls und Panzer episodes but I think I covered that in my previous blog P.S.3: I should use bigger fonts next time
