Is there really a "right" way to RATE anime???
Not long ago, I watched a video by Joey Sempai (AKA THEANIMEMAN ~~awesome Australian youtuber, if you haven't checked him out, you should :D) and he was talking about how he was getting a lot of criticism from his viewers that he gives INCREDIBLY LOW RATINGS FOR all the anime that he watches on MAL (mostly 4s and 5s), and that mistakenly translates to the audience he 'hates' anime.
Anyway, I agree with a lot of the things he said in the video to defend himself, that:
1. When one truly appreciates anime, they watch anything and everything - thus resulting in them seeing the wider spectrum of quality of characters, plot, animation and music.
2. One goes into a much deeper level of criticism and analysis, that's the same thing with movie critics, it's not that they hate movies that they are harsh, it's that they love it that they wanted their entertainment to be that much more sophisticated, and have that many more layers.
3. His 4s and 5s is his middle ground, which are numbers that he gives out for anime which he thinks are average. And to me, I believe that's completely fine, because everyone has different rating systems.
So I was like, alright, alright. Yes, yes Joey Sempai, everything you have said up to this point is pretty accurate. AND THEN he said something that I didn't exactly agree with.
He said,
Why do we rate things so highly?
I believe you take us a little too lightly, Sempai. We, as veteran anime watchers (the majority of us anyway), are not swayed that easily either. The reason we give what you consider high ratings (such as 7s or 8s) on what we consider "average" anime is because of how society has molded our brains. Since the very beginning of our schooling, we are brought up thinking that 70/100 or 80/100 is average, and anything like a 50/100 or 40/100 is nearing a C or a D, which is a fail. That is the reason why whenever we are rating anime, it's like we are marking a test,And giving it a 5 or 4, is a fail (and we feel like that's way too harsh to give out). I have asked quite a few of my friends on this topic, and a lot of them has agreed that 5s and 4s, psychologically does not feel like the middle ground for them. Thus most of our spectrum of ratings spans between 5-10, five being the worst (or a drop) and 10 being a masterpiece. So it's not that we think everything that we watch is a masterpiece and we join all mainstream fandoms, we have our opinions and everything, don't worry. ;)
But if you want to change the way we rate anime as a majority, you should blame society for being so harsh on us.
How my RATING SYSTEM WORKS (and a lot of my friends' as well)
I completely understand where your system is coming from, and that's fine. You have your 5 as your middle ground being average, 5 levels up gives you the amount of how much you like/love it, 5 levels down spans how many you dislike or hate it, one probably being you hate it/drop/argh type feeling.
Well, In the first point, I've pretty much explained half of how my rating system works, and why I provide seemingly high ratings. But as I explained earlier, 7s and 8s are my middle ground, 10 being a masterpiece, and 6 or 5 being a drop (because it bores the heck out of me, it has fallen out of the entertainment circle, the cool kids club, you get the gist).
The thing is that my levels of dislike or hate spans a little wider.
4, you are starting to offend me.
3, you are starting to piss seriously me off.
2, I'm thinking of calling up the company that created you and filing in a complaint
1. Complaint already filed because the values or characters or something in that anime is degrading against women, children, seriously fudged up, religiously offensive. etc. etc. etc.
Just like the test scores, if I come home getting a 10/100 I'm getting a whipping from my dad, so that's why anything below a 50/100 are serious deals.
So far, there is only one anime that I've giving anything below a 5 to, and that's Diabolik Lovers, if you guys can avoid watching that anime, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, don't watch it. It's so degrading against women, I can't even....
So is there really a "right" way to RATE anime?
Joey Sempai, and others reading this, I'm not trying to say that my RATING system is the best or that we should have one rating system, I'm saying that everyone's rating system has their own benefits, and suits different personalities and people.
And paradoxically, with some people rating higher and some people rating lower, we get a pretty ACCURATE MAL user rating score. (this is a mathematically proven phenomenon ~~ there was a experiment where people guessed jelly beans and some people guessed way higher and some people guessed way lower and the average of all the guesses were the exact amount of jelly beans in the jar, it's pretty incredible I know ^_^).
So yeah, that's my dissection! So please, everyone, feel free to rate however you like! And please also put in your profile or description on how you RATE your anime, so when I look at your list, I can understand you a little better when I start conversations with you because your 8s may not be the same as my 8s! But that's ok! That's what makes humanity so interesting!
(People, I'm not having a go at Joey, in fact, I'm a massive fan of his, I just like sharing opinions, which is why I created this blog in the first place. So if Joey ever came across reading this, this is just a friendly opinion. Take and leave what you want :) I'm still your fan <3).

"Shouldn't 4s and 5s be the middle ground when we are rating anime? I mean, we are giving a spectrum of 1-10. I see a lot of high raters ..........but that's a very biased rating............4s and 5s should really be the middle ground when rating anime."
Joey Sempai, I think I know where you are coming from. But:
1. Firstly, allow me explain to you why I think the majority of us actually rates things really highly.
2. Secondly, Let me explain how my rating system works.
3. Thirdly, let me reaffirm that I don't believe there is really a 'right' way to RATE anime and that paradoxically provides MAL with a pretty accurate rating score.

Fall 2015 Impressions - 1. Shinmai Maou no Keiyakusha S2
Shinmai Maou is a series whose themes don't go beyond the level of cheap entertainment. As scathing as this sounds, it is the truth for a series built entirely upon the cliches of a typical light novel story - and it is unfortunate in that it does not even push the boundaries of any of these features beyond what is already known or expected - something other LN-to-anime adaptations try to do, at the very least.
Yet it opened with some promise - most notably in the art for the OP. There was an observable increase in the art quality, and while I don't like the OP too much (it's ok I guess), this increase in the art quality gave me hopes for at least better art. Yet I found that the art in the anime was the same as the first season - this is not a bad thing, but to be let down on this aspect was sad. Neither OP nor ED was worth my time.
Nothing needs be said about the fanservice in this anime - it was entirely expected, and it was entirely shameless, to be honest. Yet, even in this aspect it fails to reach the standards of the one LN that set this subgenre up: HighSchool DxD
HighSchool DxD's recent third season was not as good as others, but the plot was certainly still there, and I enjoyed the recently released OVA. However, while Shinmai Maou's plot seems ok enough, on hindsight, the number of flaws and holes throughout it are glaring. All of a sudden, a tournament pops out of nowhere. What? Do you really settle the fate of an entire realm with a TOURNAMENT? Furthermore, the resemblance of this 'demon world' to the human world just screams lack of creativity - or effort, even. This is pushing the boundaries of acceptable cliche. Character development? That makes me laugh. While it was good seeing that Basara is obviously into Mio the most, the problem is that the treatment of the harem makes it such that one knows this is not a serious romantic development, and cannot treat it as such. Playing on the 'onii-chan' card doesn't help it very much either.
If there is one good thing about Shinmai Maou, and its only saving grace that gives it a glimmer of hope for a third season, it would be Basara's past. We observe that there must be a reason why he can become a demon like that, and why he is claimed to have two mothers by his one father. The biological impossibilities are thrown out the window, but it gives a good chance for historical development. This is the main thing going for Shinmai Maou, even in this season - let's just hope that if a third season does come out, Basara does not become like Ichigo.
On this note, I am not impressed by Shinmai Maou, and it failed my expectations - that is the most important part. I was hoping for a better season, but it's typically expected that series of this nature do not distinguish themselves in subsequent seasons. Dare I call it a waste of time? It wasn't, but for anyone with better things to do, this is one series to avoid. Would I, however, watch a third season? The strange answer is that I would, for I still believe that there may be some potential in here - as I said, it all depends on the execution of its historical development.

My Top 10 Openings of 2015
Here we go, it's the end of the year, time to look over the openings of the year and evaluate what I liked! (Also including the Winter of 2014, since that's kind of combined with Spring 2015)
My Top 10 Openings of 2015
10.Bravely You - Charlotte
Loved this opening, the series itself brings memories back of Angel Beats. Lia's a great artist, and this song is no exception. The piano was a nice touch, not heard in many openings nowadays.
8.I'm A Believer - Haikyuu!
Volleyball! Fun anime, actually sticks to legit volleyball, unlike some sports animes (Prince of tennis, *cough*).
8.BLESS YoUr NAME - High School DxD BorN
Fan service, at every corner. Even if there was some story, I didn't notice it progress anywhere. Nice opening from ChouCho, especially when it's a style that she doesn't seem to do often.
7.ISOTone - Chaos Dragon: Sekiryuu Seneki
I still need to finish the anime. :P Though from what I've seen, there's a lot of dead characters, with little development for many of them. But the opening is good, it has a nice beat and impact throughout the song.
6.Absolute Soul - Absolute Duo
Your usual anime, with minimal story and character development. However, it was Konomi Suzuki singing for the opening, and she did it very well! Great opening, but the anime could have been much better.
5.Yaiba - Cardfight!! Vanguard G: Gear Crisis-hen
Cardfight Vanguard isn't something that everyone watches, but this season's opening is boss! Probably one of the best ones that I've heard for this series.
4.Kibou no Uta - Shokugeki no Soma
When cooking hypes you, damn. Great anime, makes you really want to learn how to cook. Then you actually learn and you lose all hope for trying out those amazing recipes in the anime. :'( This opening is very nice, somewhat soothing to me as I listen to it.
3.Miiro - Kantai Collection: KanColle
Miiro is soooooooo good. You can hear how much Akino put into the song as she sings it. I still laugh when people mishear this opening as well (WANKERRRR!!!) Can't wait until the movie and second season is out. I NEED MORE SHIP GIRLS!!
2.Bull's Eye - Hidan no Aria AA
Bull's Eye, you are a great song. Almost anything from Nano is great, though some just don't stick with me. It's not a surprise that Nano did a good job on this song, but I'm still surprised that she created such a well-done opening! The tone of the song is very fitting, especially as the series went on and had a darker tone. I'm just sad that it's over already. More Aria, pls.
1.Brand-new World - Gakusen Toshi Asterisk
My favorite opening for 2015! As an anime, Gakusen Toshi Asterisk is pretty average. Very nice animation in the fights scenes, this opening really matches the anime. It's very fast paced, and the beginning really makes it a great opening for me. The beat before the singing is great, and it really hypes you up. This should just be the second season's opening, unless they can trump that (Which I can't see happening, honestly).

Welcome to the Blog of Controversial Opinions and Love for Anime
So I thought, what better way to share my opinion, and rant about the things I hate, fan about the things I love, and compare opinions than to do a blog, sharing my experience watching each anime I watch.
My name is Niqui, welcome to my blog, a place where anime lovers can come to discuss anime with me, why me? Because i'm pretty cool. And I love anime. And I'm great at conversations, so let's have some, yeah? Maybe?
I'm fairly new to anime, so I thought it would be cool, and a lot of fun, to document my thoughts and opinions about the anime as I watch them for the first time since the anime I have watched up to date is limited to about 4 anime's. And I decided to share my thoughts on social media because let's face it, our generation relies on technology, no denying the inevitable!
Welcome to the Niqster blog!
No? No? Okay, well we can figure out a new name, no biggie! Just give it some time guys, all good!
Anyway, catch ya later alligators!
~Niqui
P.S Because I have to relate this blog to at least one anime I thought I would tell you guys what I will be watching first SO drum roll please .....
Dance in the Vampire Bund
Let the controversy begin ... *evil laugh accompanied by a devious grin*
P.S.S I'm also finishing Sama-Maid but plan to do a blog later in life about that as I am already 3 quarters through and I want to document my thoughts AS I watch the anime, plus i have much to share about my love for that anime! ;D

First Impressions - Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt
While editing my profile(s) I decided to write this first impression of Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt. Now then, this looks and feels way, way more different than Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, well that's due to Thunderbolt being in the Universal Century and Iron-Blooded Orphans being in the Post Disaster, the power of Wikipedia!
Anyways, from what we are getting this has some potential to be great, it's only 4 episodes oh well, by that I mean it can do a number of things with this setting it has. I haven't seen a Gundam besides Iron-Blooded Orphans so I don't know what to fully expect out of Thunderbolt.
All in all I hope that this can go somewhere, looking forward to the remaining three episodes.

First Impression, Episodes 1 ; Dance in the Vampire Bund
For some reason, I feel almost nervous to watch this anime. I created a Forum to find out what other thought of the anime due to the bad stigma haunting this anime, however was rather surprised by the generally good reviews, and even had a few conversations about the anime itself, the pros and cons and was finally convinced to get on and watch it.
And as I'm writing this, loading the first episode, I feel ... anxious for this series, for this anime. I want it to be good, I want it to be great, I want an anime with feeling and I want an anime to make me think, to come up with conspiracies and to enjoy.
But even with the good reviews and nudges to watch this anime, I still can't help but wonder if it's just going to butcher like every says. Or majority say anyway. Here we go.
So episode 1...
The whole episode aside from the roof top scene, was almost excruciating to watch and off putting very much. At first the idea of Vampires proving their existence on tv was a bit far fetch but I had to remind myself that I'm watching a vampire anime, some people would believe that to be far fetch.
I really enjoyed the roof top scene. I already love Mina, her strong determination and drive as well as her mature exterior, compared to her cutesy surface and childlike presentation (pigtails and that adorable outfit).
Overall I was disappointed with the boorishness, the lazy animation style (although i know little about animation, to me it just seemed lazy and unfinished) but highly intrigued by what is to come.
My next post will involve a few episodes, but I wanted to write a bit about my first impression and I don't want these posts to drag on to long!

Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai Review
This one's pretty simple. It's one of those 'developing team relationships' anime, with a little harem influence thrown in. If you're in it for the relationships/character development, it's more or less pretty good, up to around eps 11-12, which are more or less a 'finale' because it's the right time to have one.
The backstory of this one is pretty weak, and the villain factions (if you can keep track of them) are motivated by the most ridiculously illogical goals- but the major weakness of this anime is the 'power levels' for the various artifacts or abilities are pretty much nonsense. In particular the 'super sacrifice' needed for the final unlock on the artifacts in the last ep is pretty much rubbish. They're just as powerful as whatever seems appropriate for whatever conflict is currently dreamed up. That doesn't make it bad- just an easy way it could be better.
It's possible this series will get better over time, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.
