Since it’s been nearly over a year while waiting for a doctor who won’t see me because all the terminally ill cases of “Ow, my stomach hurts” keeps getting in the way, I’ve been putting off reviews.
SORRY.
Well what else should I say? “Ow, my stomach is maybe sorta interfering with what I can and can’t eat, yet I can still have soda… and chocolate… and Chinese food…”
...With that said, as means of apology, here’s the much anticipated (at least for 1 week before my fans realized it wouldn’t come out until this time next year) top 5 J.R.P.G list of 2012.
(Cue jazzy award theme)
One note before I start, I had to disqualify Tales of the Abyss because it’s only a re-release. Granted Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, Persona 4 The Golden and Devil Survivor: Overclocked could be considered re-releases also, but because they changed their titles and added some… stuff, they are still eligible for the running.
#5: The Last… Days of 2012
Looking back on the somewhat hazy days after Christmas 2012, I got The Last Story as a present. I played it, sorta liked it, and since it was the only thing that could beat my guilty pleas- I mean the game I hated that I would be forced to put on the list; Atelier Meruru, it was a no-brainer. Take that you dumb game… with your addicting alchemy… and replay ability… and surprisingly good boss music… Where was I? Oh yes, number 4.
#4: The OTHER Shin Megami Tensai Release
Number four on the list was a little hard to decide because it came down to 2 games in the same series… No not Persona, I’m talking about Devil Survivor’s 1 (Overclocked) and 2. In the end though, I had to give it to Overclocked. It had plenty of flawed characters suffering in a psychologically traumatic world that used to be everyday life. And that’s a much more interesting premise than 2. 7 days, one for each monster? They attack large towers? Why is this “Joe” the only one with personality? (Burn!)
#3: Did I mention I’m a “Tales of…” fan yet?Tales of Graces f. Has flaws, ect, don’t care, ect, f*** you this is my list, ect, here’s number 2… ect.
#2: Now it’s THAT Shin Megami Tensai release
It seems like 2012 was the year JRPGS decided to avoid having to think of new innovations and just bring back some fan favorites (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Persona 4 The Golden bringing back one of the most beloved video gaming experiences to North America and all of the arguments about Persona 3 being better with it. (I will not state whether one is better than the other. Do not attempt to start an argument with me or I will shove you into a T.V that leads to Tartarus.)
#1: Rutile is the first cute character who’s not annoying? INSTANT-WIN!
If there’s any doubt that my opinion differs with most people’s when it comes to JRPG’s, it is immediately dismissed as soon as I say this: Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention is my number 1 JRPG of 2012 simply because of the extra story featuring Rutile and Stella. I never really expected to be as emotionally attached to this side story as I was to the main story, but, oddly enough, I found myself even more immersed in that story than the main one (which is quite a feat). I even chocked up a little when the story took a very dark, and depressing turn. …Well excuse me for taking a game seriously, but the twist is so sudden that it completely took me off guard for a game where violence and mayhem is made fun again. I honestly hope that whoever was in charge of that story is one of the main writers for Disgaea: D2, because then we are in for a fantastic treat if that’s the case.
Anyways, enough of me gushing vaguely over what a fantastic addition to the already good game of Disgaea 3 which you should totally buy a PS Vita for and play because I am not paid to advertise it and maybe I should take English again because I can’t stop making run-on sentences and maybe I should stop typing now because it’s late and I have more video games to play.
…A Tales of Xillia article is coming soon. It will be more professional than this, don’t worry. See you next time.
