Usagi Drop was a very interesting specimen. Being a josei anime I was hesitant to watch it. I don't particularly dislike the genre, but I'm generally bored with the titles I watch. This proved to be a nice exception and a very rewarding experience. Usagi Drop tells the story of a single man, Daikichi, who has just learned that his grandfather has passed away. While paying his respects he notices a small child that turns out to be his grandfather's illegitimate daughter, Rin. He soon learns that there is some dispute over her custody, since nobody wants to take the responsibility to raise her. Daikichi decides to take on the challenge and the rest of the story details their new life together as each struggles to adapt to their new circumstances. The story itself doesn't have any major plot surprises, but the story isn't really plot driven so this wasn't an issue. Rather, the story focuses on the interactions between Daikichi and Rin and the bond they create. This is a very easygoing anime, and there isn't much conflict. Any issues that come up are solved relatively easily. Because of this, the show can come off as boring at times, but the heartwarming, and often comedic, interplay between Daikichi and Rin provide enough entertainment to overcome this fault. However, the few serious moments in the show, are very skillfully executed and the character's feelings and reactions to certain events are very believable and undeniably human. Being able to present a story that is so relatable isn't an easy feat, but Usagi Drop proves that with strong writing and well rounded characterization it is possible. The story is presented without judgement, leaving the viewer to sort out their emotions on various issues and concepts that the story raises. Usagi Drop's art is very stylistic and unique in how it shifts from one format to another. This combined with a subdued soundtrack complimented the soft tone of the series quite well. Many viewers will be turned off be the lack of a flowing narrative, but for those interested in a heartwarming tale about love, responsibility, and understanding, Usagi Drop will leave you satisfied.
