I guess this is an example why I watch anime...
I was totally captivated by the opening episode of “Zetsuen no Tempest”. So I checked around the “usual suspects” and found the first 18 chapters of the on-going manga series. I then spent a couple of hours one work night staying up too late while reading those chapters. I was hooked
The next episode convinced me even more, so I dug around Amazon.jp and found that 7 volumes of the manga have been published. So I ordered those 7 volumes. When I received them I saw that the tankoubans went up through chapter 34, while the scans were now only up to chapter 19. I'm a sucker for spoilers so I skimmed chapters 20-34 and became even more caught up with the story and characters.
And wouldn't you know it? Chapter 34 ended up at a key and surprising (but logical) cliff-hanger.
I then watched the next few episodes and enjoyed how the anime was adapting but not slavishly copying the manga.
Now, if you buy things from Amazon anywhere, the Amazon software starts to try to guess what you might like and so sends you “suggestions” on a regular basis. So I keep on getting “suggestions” from Amazon.jp because I keep ordering things from them – particularly current manga magazines. And in the recent suggestions were ads for Shounen Gangan Monthly. The October and November 2012 issues had covers from “Tempest” with October featuring Yoshino and November featuring Mahiro.
So a few days ago I gave in to the Dark Side and ordered those two back issues. I didn't know which issue contained chapter 35, so I decided to take my chances.
Well, the issues came today, and as luck would have it, they contain chapters 38 and 39, so I don't have chapters 35 - 37 available to me and likely won't until the next tankouban comes out. (If anyone knows a site with scans of chapters 35 - 37 I would love to know!)
Fortunately, I could figure out (I think) much of what important things happened in chapters 35 - 37 from chapter 38, but WOW – what a shocker in chapter 38. (Once again, totally consistent with what had gone on before.)
So there was no “real choice” left for me and I pre-ordered the December 2012 issue of Shounen Gangan this evening. It is supposed to come out on the 12th, so I ought to receive it 3 or 4 days later. Now I'm ordering 3 manga magazines on a monthly basis – Shounen Gangan for “Tempest”, Bessatsu Shounen Magazine for “Sankarea”, and Gangan Joker for “Dusk Maiden of Amnesia”.
BTW – I find it interesting that the “bonus” little key holder/cellphone bangle that came with the November issue has Mahiro on it. That's almost as if the series were shoujo instead of shounen. (I would have expected either Hakaze or Aika to be on the first bonus.)
So yet another 1000 page manga magazine starts to pile up in my basement...
