Summer 2013 - Entry I

I decided to write up some of the first impressions I had of the Anime shows for 2013. Here is the blog entry for the ones I've seen so far. 1. Monogatari Series: Second Season Wow. I'm actually not a big fan of the series because of the main male protagonist and his girlfriend. I've never really liked their characters. Actually, this episode makes me think that the main problem may be the male protagonist of the series because I actually didn't mind his girlfriend in this one and the fact I love many of the sub-characters is making this series an enjoyment. I don't know where it will end up, particularly if they end up having some of the same issues with the original series. The episode was far better then I expected and I'm glad I picked it up despite the fact there are certain things that aggravate me about the series. Now hopefully those things won't show up. 2. Free! I am leery about picking up anything with slash vibes because I hate stereotypes and that is what I get from most series with slash. I say slash vibes because it hasn't yet been confirmed whether there will be any sort of pairing in this series, let alone slash. I do know that some of the BL fangirls want it. That said, I can see Haruka's admiration for Rin being more then just admiration and a crush on his part, while Rin's sister may in turn have a crush on Haruka. It would be a rather interesting relationship dynamic if it is presented right. Right now I've fallen in love with the characters and love the fanservice. I'm crossing my fingers that it won't go overboard and if it does end up being slash that the relationship will be something like No. 6. On top of this the plot has some serious funny moments, and I love the quirks the characters have shown so far. 3. Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou I wasn't sure what to expect, but we got here another dark Magical Girl series. The first episode is entirely creepy and I'm left wondering if the main characters cousin's existence was completely erased when she killed her, so there is a major mystery element to this. 4. Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi This is likely the series I most looked forward to. I loved the first episode, love the art work. I'm also thinking that the guy is her father despite his denial and that the entire town was zombies. Why they would tell her that she was the grave keeper I am at this point unable to surmise though. 5. Uchouten Kazouku This was better then I expected and honestly a nice surprise. I like the main character as well as the rest of the cast and the romance element is also intriguing. I love how the main character gets in trouble with his brother like he does. There also seems to be good set up for more character development as the series progresses, something I didn't expect as I thought it would be more of a basic slice of life and not have as serious of a plot line as it seems to have. 6. Blood Lad I saw the preview for this one before I watched the first episode and I thought the show wouldn't be that great. Let's just say that the preview I saw didn't do the series any justice and the series first episode was rather funny. The show feels like it will have some interesting humor and I like the style for this series as well. The characters are also interesting, so that is a good thing. I like too the different spin they took on vampires for this one. 7. Senki Zessho Symphogear G... Please don't have the budget issues the first season had. Please, please, please don't. That said, this has already started off way better then first season. There is a bit of rehash in the first episode, so if you don't want to pick up the first season you don't have to. At least I hope not. 8. Kiniro Mosaic The series is very cute and I am reminded of the series where a little Japanese girl goes to France and gets to live in an art gallery. It is possible they're by the same person, but they may also not be. The interactions are also darling. 9. Servant x Service I honestly didn't know what to expect, but I love the humor as well as the characters. I get the feeling that the male co-worker that joined with the main protagonist did is the son of the man who didn't reject the birth certificate with the horrible number of names. 10. Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C3-bu It is honestly not as good as I expected, but I also find myself enjoying it. The characters are interesting, but they don't have much depth yet. The references to other things is also interesting. 11. Brothers Conflict There is nothing that really makes this series stand out so far other then the art work. The first episode was really about introducing the characters. 12. Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist I'm not sure what to think about this series. It is another series that has slash undertones to it and as I've already said... I'm wary about that kind of stuff because I don't like the stereotypes. It has some positive things going for it, as well as some negatives. The humor is interesting, it has an interesting art style. The plot seems off for some strange reason and it needs more explanation and background. I am reminded of two other series though, so that may be enough to keep me watching this series even if it isn't as great as I would like it to be, as this is another show that so far hasn't met my expectations. 13. Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku The series has some nice humor, but honestly doesn't have anything memorable about it at this point in time compared to other series that I've seen. 14. Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou I was meh about the series before it started and I'm still meh. This particular series really could go either way. The humor so far is interesting, but not really much yet to write about. Same with the plot. 15. Love Lab This is another series I was meh about and am still meh. The humor is funny, but nothing really stood out to me as memorable. There are also slash undertones. Hopefully what's been said by those who are familiar with the regular series pans out or its not stereotyped to badly. 16. Senyuu 2 I'm going to admit that I like this series despite the fact I think it is not that great of a series. It's a short series, parody and good for a laugh. I get a lot of the references as well and love the Emo side kick. That also said, some of the humor will go over some people's heads. 17. Fantasista Doll I didn't have much expectations of this as it felt like a knock off of Rozen Maiden, not to mention it felt like it was trying to play off the popularity Aikatsu has. The first episode caught my attention and drew me in for the beginning, and then... well, things went down hill from there. The implementation of the actual card game if this is based off one is horrible and if it isn't based on one they need to do their research. There is a reference to Magic the Gathering, which feels horribly out of place. On top of this it seems to be influenced by Card Captor Sakura, and not in a good way like one would hope. The characters are rather bland and the guy who gave the girl the cards is creepy big time and comes across as a pedophile, not to mention the fact I think it is her teacher as well as someone she knew as a young child. Really... if there is going to be romance between the two this is going to be a very bad show for kids, but then the opening says its not for kids either. And yet I thought it should have been. On top of this a lot of the dialog between characters was forced/rushed. 18. Maji de Otaku na English! Ribbon-chan: Eigo de Takakau Mahou Shojo I didn't know what I was getting into. It's honestly not that great of a show, but I can brush off some of the issues due to the fact it is supposed to be educational programing. I'm also rather sad that Danganronpa is placing lower on my list then this one as I was looking forward to it. 19. Danganronpa: Kibou no Gauken to Zetsubou no Koukousei – The Animation I was looking forward to this one because of the summary. I thought it would be similar to Higurashi and Persona, but in the long run it's fallen flat big time. I dislike a lot of the art work, the style is to far out there and it feels like they went over board with some of the character designs. On top of this the opening and sequences where it cuts to commercial were dreadful and the kind of thing I expect to cause seizures for people if they don't have the right filters on their screens. On the flip side, its also the first episode and we've barely been introduced to the characters, but that's also a problem as we all know from the summary someone is going to get killed off next chapter and the chances of said character getting any development is questionable. 20. Gifuu Doudou!!: Kanetsugu to Keiji I think this will be one of the worst for the season, many of the others being far above, but this I honestly expected just looking at the cover art and summary before stepping into this. The episode was horribly boring, the characters bland and the art work... please... there is a reason American comics are getting away from characters that look like their on steroids. I was honestly hoping for a little more depth. Anyways... I started watching it, so I'll try finishing it for the sake of finishing it. That, and so I can give it a fair review if I decide to review it.
