Favorite Women of Anime

This is my first official blog entry and I figured I'll start off with the basics. There's nothing I love more than I strong female character in an anime, book, movie, etc. so I figured I'd make a list of the best women I've come across in anime now. I know this list will change overtime as I complete more shows and start new ones, but I feel the need to give props to the ones I know now. These are in no real order, they'll just be listed in whatever way I wish. Most of them will come from my favorite characters list with just a few editions I feel deserve a spot on here.
Number One~ Yoko Littner
Ever since starting Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, I've already grown fond of Yoko. This anime has a predominately male cast with the especially manly Kamina as the protagonist at the beginning. This doesn't make Yoko anymore inferior compared to them. The skimpy outfit does make her a fanservice character but she's defined far beyond that. She's a school teacher of all things and loves children. Not to mention she's courageous, intelligent, and kind. And she's a guns specialist at only fourteen years-just throwing that out there. This woman will always be one of my favorites and deserves credit for being one of the most memorable characters of anime.
Number Two~ Sheryl Nome
The first thing that made me notice Sheryl was her beauty. She's a gorgeously designed character and before starting Macross Frontier, I expected her to be an arrogant and selfish person. As I continued to watch the series, I noticed that I was proven wrong entirely. Sheryl is truly an inspiring character since she started off her life with no parents or home and used her passion to sing to make herself into a famous idol singer. She's also a clear example of someone who is sexually confident. She shows pride in her figure and she has the right to. Then there's her singing talents which are amazing. What truly made me love her is that even though she went through so many ordeals like going through a deathly sickness, losing her secretary, and watching her fame crumble, she still manages to rise through it all. Her interactions with Ranka also showed how supporting she is. She truly turned out to be a nice person. I came into Macross expected a snobby character and got someone entirely different in a wonderful surprise.
Number Three~ Maka Albarn
When I started Soul Eater, I was expecting Death the Kid to be the protagonist. Though he was an important character, I was happy to see Maka was the main character of this anime. Soul Eater is of the Shouen genre and normally a male protagonist is far more common. This anime instead focuses on a strong, hardworking and intelligent girl. Maka is adorable, feminine, and incredibly courageous. She loves all of her friends and when dealing with Crona, realizes the importance of being understanding even to enemies. She doesn't allow her fear to get in the way of her goals which is enough to make her my hero. This isn't just some trait she has, it's the most valuable part of her character that helps her win in the end.
Number Four~ Rin Asogi
I finished Mnemosyne recently and though it's far different than most animes I watch, it left a pretty good impression on me. Rin especially drew me towards the show and I loved her throughout the anime. Rin still manages to have a smile on her face and carefree personality despite how torturous her immortal life is. No matter how many times she gets maimed, she can still find time to help though she cares about and goes out of her way to protect people. Even if it involves undergoing severe pain to do it, she keeps throwing herself out there for the sake of others. She takes advantage of her immortality instead of only viewing it as a burden. And she's a complete badass who outsmarts and defeats the people always out to destroy her. In the end of the anime, Apos tries to force her into a place that would render her immobile and weak. She never allows herself to be controlled by the most threatening man in her life and ends up one upping him.
Number Five~ Utena Tenjou
Revolutionary Girl Utena is amongst the most feminist animes out there with an incredibly feminsit lead. Utena defies the gender roles set up for her and doesn't allow herself to be made into what's traditionally feminine. She wants to be a prince and knows that her gender shouldn't define that. Not every girl wants to be a princess. The Rose Bride is used as a metaphor for how women are expected to be submissive to men and Utena just doesn't want any of it. She finds it unfair for obvious reasons and defends Anthy as her prince. It's a beautiful show and Utena really speaks volumes that pretty little pink haired girls can be whoever they want.
Number Six~ Grace O'Connor
Warning: Major Spoilers for Macross Frontier
Much like the heroine Sheryl Nome, the antagonist Grace very much deserves a spot on here. I am a sucker for a good villain and Grace practically defines the trope Magnificent Bastard (or Bitch in her case). Grace is as cruel as she intelligent which only makes her and even more commendable foe. She takes her sweet time manipulating Sheryl and later Ranka into making her into the most powerful mind in the universe. It takes her years to move up to this rank and yet she still manages to go through it flawlessly. She dies twice and obviously expects something to happen to her body and thus she creates back ups. She uses Brea to make Ranka do as she pleases while using the guilt Ranka feels for killing her family to her advantage. I could go on and Grace's elaborate planning truly proves how sneaky and conniving she really is. As much ad I'd love to add more characters like Mami Tomoe or Medusa, I think I'll save them for another time. There will most likely be a part two to this list coming up eventually so hang in there.
