Mawaru Penguindrum

Have you ever been annoyed by animes that provide needless amounts of filler and scenes that are completely irrelevant to the storyline. If so, Mawaru Penguindrum will be a breath of fresh air. This anime centers around the story of two brothers whose sister has been diagnosed with an incurable illness. Within the first episode she dies, but is magically revived by a penguin hat. What happens from there can only be described as a surreal trip through a world of symbolic imagery. At first this can be confusing, since the show is rarely meant to be taken literally. Rather, the recurring images and symbolic devices are meant to represent characteristics of the cast, and are often used to foreshadow future events. In general, most of these devices are relevant, however, since the show is primarily dependent on these symbols, it becomes nearly impossible to answer all the questions and loose ends that still remain by the end of the show. But I'm not here to dissect a piece of abstract art. Despite being incoherent at times the show is almost always entertaining. It's fast paced and incredibly unique. The animation is very crisp. The soundtrack was forgettable, but I did like the opening themes for the show, and how they tied in to the plot. Despite a lackluster ending I would strongly recommend giving this show a chance. Oh, and did I mention penguins? 7/10
