The July 2013 issue of Bessatsu Shounen Magazine contains chapter 42 of “Sankarea” on pages 367 through 399. The title is “Watashi no Ibasho”/”The Place Where I Belong” and the English second title is “Resident Evil”. There is a colour page at the start which advertises the eighth tankouban which has also been published this month.
The chapter opens with quite a surprise as we are back in Japan with Mount Fuji in the background. Chihiro's father and sister are sweeping the entrance to the temple when Chihiro suddenly walks through the entry gate. He looks quiet and tired and is carrying Babu in his arms. Babu's eyes are bright and alive again. Other than Babu, Chihiro is alone.
The scene shifts to later on as Chihiro, Mero, their father, Ranko and Ranko's mother are eating in Ranko's mother's place. Chihiro thinks about what he told everyone – that he and Babu got back this morning because Rea's examinations took longer than expected. He didn't mention anything about deaths.
Mero notices that Babu is wearing a coat over most of its body and head and assumes that the coat is covering healing injuries. Chihiro remembers how Darlene speculated that Babu got soaked with the zombie medicine when her father's vials were broken and that got rid of Babu's zombie trance-state. After that Babu started to get better – Salvia's drugs actually worked on the cat.
Ranko starts to ask Chihiro about their grandfather, Rea and Darlene. Chihiro answers by telling Ranko that his grandfather used to live on the island and decided to stay there a long time again. Chihiro then thinks back to the island and when he and Rea found Darlene holding the motionless Boyle. Chihiro asked about Salvia and Ji-chan replied that Salvia was gone and done for. At that moment some guards ran up but they recognized Boyle. Darlene then shouted out for the guards to get help and to get them to a real hospital.
But Boyle tells Darlene that he doesn't need to go to a hospital because his wounds aren't bleeding and he doesn't fell any pain. The main problem is that he is mostly paralyzed. Chihiro starts to argue with Ji-chan but his grandfather tells him to listen and that he can recover on the island better than in a hospital.
Chihiro asks if the resurrection drug was perfected and Ji-chan replies that it wasn't. Never-the-less, Boyle intends to stay and help the zombies. He wants to atone for what he did and he intends to give the zombies proper burials.
Darlene says that she is going to stay and atone too, but Boyle tells her to leave and to start a new life. Darlene is upset and tells Boyle that now with her father gone she has no one that she can rely upon other than him.
Chihiro takes Darlene's arm and tells her that she isn't thinking straight and that they have to respect his grandfather's wishes. But Darlene pulls away and tells Chihiro that while he has a point she doesn't need a hospital either and her pride won't let her go without making her own decisions.
Back at the dinner Mero comments that it is a little lonely now with Darlene's “homestay” over and Rea back at her parent's house. Ranko grills Chihiro and asks if he got into a fight with the girls while they were on the island. Chihiro is noncommittal in his response. He then leaves the table to go to the washroom. Chihiro stops outside for a moment, looks up at the night sky and at the scar on his arm, and thinks about Rea's loss of memory.
Back on the island as everyone was being evacuated from the laboratory, outside of the lab building Darlene told Chihiro about Rea's loss of memory. Chihiro asks why Rea doesn't remember anything but Babu's name. Darlene says that while Rea remembers Babu's name she doesn't remember any details about him. Rea doesn't know that she is a zombie, nor does she know who Chihiro or Darlene are.
Darlene continues that it is better that Chihiro stay away from Rea for now because Rea has something of a negative perception of Chihiro. Chihiro argues that even Salvia said that being with Chihiro was good for Rea, but Darlene insists that the opposite is better right now.
Chihiro decides to try a little shock therapy, goes up to Rea, and shows her some of the photos he took of her when she first stayed with him. Rea is shocked and denies remembering anything about it. She accuses Chihiro of being a “peeping photographer”. Chihiro tries to show more photos and Rea gets even more upset. Darlene just shakes her head and tells Chihiro that he is making things worse.
Back to the present, as Chihiro leaves the washroom Ranko is waiting outside for him. She tells him to tell her the truth about what really happened.
And at Rea's home the maids are in a panic because they don't know what to do when Aria comes home and finds out that Rea is back. Meanwhile, Rea is sitting outside, eating hydrangea leaves, and trying to understand why nothing is familiar, not even the cloths that she is wearing. Rea goes in and asks the maids for her regular clothes. At that moment Aria comes in drunk. The maids push Rea away and try to hide her. Aria catches a glimpse of Rea and asks the maids who she is. The maids reply that she is a new maid.
Rea then comes to the conclusion that Aria must be her mother so she wants to greet her, but the maids push her away again and tell here that it isn't the right time. The maids then get the idea to disguise Rea and dress her up in a neko-maid outfit. Rea wonders where she really belongs.
