I just got a new laptop. Obviously, it's pretty awesome compared to my old one. The only thing not so awesome? Windows 8. I wasted several hours of my time trying to figure it out and get used to it.
The first thing everyone will notice is that the Start button is gone, and the Start menu is replaced with a Start screen. What was wrong with the old Start menu? The new Start screen, on the other hand, is loaded with a ton of worthless junk, like Stock info, weather, and travel locations.
The Start screen seems to be the "shell" now, and the desktop is now an application. That means you can open applications outside of the desktop. I have no idea why you would want to do that though. Applications opened outside of the desktop are forced to take up the entire screen, look ugly, and AFAIK, cannot be closed with a single click. I end up opening every application on the desktop anyways.
Probably the most annoying "feature" of Windows 8 is that if your mouse moves near any corner of the screen, there will be something that pops out. I don't think I need to explain how frustrating it is if you need to click something near the corner, only to have something you don't want pop out, and you click on that instead.
And what happened to classic view? Apparently Microsoft took out classic view from Windows 8 because too few people used them. I happen to be one of the few that prefer classic view to the newer themes. I really liked the blue and grey colors, with everything being rectangular shaped. Why force me to use a theme I don't like?
I have no idea what Microsoft was thinking. Why fix what isn't broken? Or in Microsoft's case, they took something that wasn't broken, and broke it.
