From Up On Poppy Hill is an anime movie from Studio Ghilbli. It was directed by Goro Miyazaki. His father Hayao Miyazki co-founded the studio and is a very accomplished director. Hayao also did the screenplay.
The movie is being shown at a first-run theater and not at an "art house" cinema. I saw the movie today. I went for two reasons. I am a fan of Studio Ghilbli movies and I want to support any theater that is showing anime movies.
I was disappointed in the movie. It wasn't what I expected, but if I had thought about the movie I shouldn't have been surprised. It was dubbed which is not my first choice. I think if the story is set in Japan and the characters are Japanese, then the language should be Japanese. I got the impression that the dialogue was not only dubbed but "Americanized". Some of the expressions that the high school students used seemed too modern. The story takes place in 1963 Japan, but it didn't sound like it was 1963 Japan.
This isn't an attempt at a review. I am not going to do that. Overall it was good movie. Not a great movie like other Studio Ghilbli films. I am still glad I went since I want to encourage other anime movies to be shown on the big screen.
