I forgot why I downloaded this anime. I think it was fishergirl that highly recommended it early on in Winter season. I'm glad I finally did pick it up because I've been hooked on it since I started watching. I find this anime totally refreshing in it's combination of the elements I've enjoyed in past anime I've seen. It reminds me of Stein's Gate or Code Geass with a large distinction in that a lot of the turn-around points in the action aren't from violence or power but from the rhetoric. The best example of that would be at the climax of the Tree of Exodus' revival. It really kept the watcher on edge of their seat because the rhetoric made the tenseness and conflict all about perspective and revelation. This might be the birth of an interest in mystery genre for me. I've never really enjoyed that genre before just because I always never got what was going on, nor had any inclination on how to begin guessing what was going on.
We get the little bit of Stein Gate from the psychological aspect of the anime though the great thing is it isn't as emotionally tumultuous like Stein Gate. Even though they reveal part of that in the later series, I think what makes it more like a mystery is the fashion in which they reveal more about the hidden past and argue about the present. Then of course, in there's the time aspect to Zetsuen no Tempest that makes it like Stein Gate as well.
The reason why this anime is so enjoyable is it talks about the what-if scenarios. Much like how in Code Geass the characters were always trying to be a step ahead in anticipating their opponent in this anime, they do the same but on a more one-on-one level spread throughout several characters.
In the most recent episode watched, 20, I was attempting to guess the possible outcomes that might happen, and when they finally revealed it, I was totally blown away. It's almost like they were spending all that time hinting at it, then confronting and openly discussing it, to throw you completely off track. Whoever made this story, did a great job of diverting my focus to who killed Fuwa Aika. So when they finally revealed a bit more, I was totally blind-sided.
Anyways, for sure I'm bringing up this anime from an 8 to a 9 because of that. This story and anime doesn't just have good fighting and animation and magic like Fate Stay Night but the way they add in elements of rhetoric and perspective make this anime a mystery genre as well. I don't think many anime will get close to that standard or execution of the dialogue or animation. It'll be difficult for other anime to combine this same genres pull off a great anime rather than trying to just combine different genres together. The mish-mash of different genres is cohesive and seamless helping to tell the story in a more exciting way. I'm impressed. x3 But that's probably quite obvious now. x3
I might add as a side note that the addition of the Shakesspeare quotes isn't superficial. You can tell that the writer(s) put their heart and soul into this to make it similar to his work on so many different levels. It must've taken a lot of time studying Shakespeare and deciding what to do with it, how to make the anime parallel to the stories and yet unique at the same time. Unfortunately both those works they mention, Hamlet and The Tempest, I haven't read but I'm pretty sure my enthusiasm for this series will at least give me enough momentum to pick them up. Though no promises on if I'll finish them. xD
Well, back to the story! On to episode 21!
