First props to the week go out to the Minami-ke Omatase OVA. What an absolute delight that was. Chibis, Uchida retardery (with an electric fan), Hosaka strippery (and breaking out into song), that was the best of Minami-ke wrapped up in 25 minutes. Excellent work. I would have had this out yesterday, hoping Seitokai no Ichizon would make an appearance, but no. Of course it will show up as soon as I post this. 1. Little Busters [last week: 2]: I'm not one for black hair at all but jesus christ, Yuiko Kurugaya. We also changed up the WEAPONS! theme this week, with Masato taking on Kurugaya instead of Kengo and being Tomoyo'd into embarrassment - well, he would have been embarrassed if he possessed a feeling of shame, which he definitely does not. Minimizing the Natsume and Komari portions of the episode helped a lot also. There be some Kuds next week, that sounds like something JC Staff will be enjoying. Score: 8.5, trending up 2. Medaka Box [1] - Zenkichi and Medaka get a taste of Miyakonojou's power, and Medaka's got to get stronger. Her plan takes her to the administrative offices of her dubious siscon of a brother, who possesses a Medaka body pillow, several pictures of Medaka in various states of undress, and at least 130 Medaka plushies with moving ahoges. What a guy he is. It didn't do anything wrong to get leapfrogged, LB was just better. No shame in that. Score: 8.2 3. Hidamari Sketch 4 [6]: Despite all the bathing Yunos, the franchise is really growing on me. This week Miyako got wider than usual (if you don't believe me, check the profile pic), impugned Hiro's svelteness twice (how dare she!), and did nothing to fix her leaky exploding room. We also saw Yuno get stuffed into an earthquake simulator and make Kana Asumi noises. It was very unpleasant, yet hilarious at the same time. I hate that this show is growing on me. Start being dull again. Score: 8.1, trending up 4. Sword Art Online [3]: Welcome to the world of Alfheim Online, a world where everyone is an elf and Asuna has been taken captive by some guy planning to marry her (isn't she still 16?) Kirito enters the game world (with an assist from Egil, it's cool that he's still around) Score: 7.9, trending down over the past month or so 5. Chuunibyou [4]: Another episode where Rikka autism levels exceeded 9000. I wouldn't mind seeing more of her sister, but instead we have a new middle-schooler with some of the most absurd hair I've ever seen in a cartoon. I laughed out loud when Rikka went for a sweep of Yuuta; that's a move I don't think I've seen since Ranma. Not sure what the deal is with the girl who's got the thing for Yuuta, she could not be more obvious about getting into his pants. Score: 7.7 6. Seitokai no Ichizon [5] - Decides to get uploaded randomly. No episode this week, probably either one next week or none this week and four the week after. Score: 7.7 ------------------------------ 7. Toriko [7]: Holy shit, the Toriko dub looks amazing. So impossibly over the top. That is going on the "must-buy" list. As for this episode itself, this adventure through Death Falls, meh. I'm not sure if there are any good arcs coming up for a long while. The "four beast" manga arc has been one of the poorest, I feel. It hasn't made any sort of sense at all. Score: 7.3 8. Magi [8]: The first dungeon is complete (and my R key begins to fail). Alibaba's paid off his debts and Aladdin has freed the sharif's 12-year-old slave girl. The adventure continues for a long while yet. I'm doubting this is any sort of long runner but I would be pleased if it is. Score: 7.3 ------------------------------------ 9. Robotics;Notes [9]: Looks like it's getting 22 episodes, so there better be a lot more there than "cutesy peppy girl and lazy friend build a robot." Sure, cutesy peppy girl can hold my attention for a few episodes, but only like 5 or 6, unless she's autistic, which Aki is not. Score: 7.1 10. Psycho-pass [10]: Evidently also getting 22 episodes. Hasn't really hooked me yet other than the horror that this police state world entails. I wonder how it got to that point where even thinking about committing a crime is punishable by prison. Very forgettable second episode. Needs a big third one to avoid getting lost in the shuffle. Score: 6.8 11. Rock Lee, now with Chibi Akatsukis [11] - I have no idea how this show continues to produce episodes, I really don't. I figured it would be 12 and out; I'm honestly kind of impressed. Score: 6.7 12. Shin Sekai Yori [14]: The everpresent haunting theme accompanying this show works really well. I'm glad we got the info-dump this week, thoguht I'm still not quite sure what the flashbacks to the world from 500 years ago have added. Score: 6.5 13. Hayate no Gotoku 3 [12]: I seem to be the only person in the universe who finds Hinagiku boring. I can't help that the rest of you are wrong. There's no humor when she's around unless Yukiji is also involved. Also, Ruca can go away, forever. She hasn't added a thing yet. At least Hina has Yukiji. Ruca seems to have no purpose whatsoever. This was a worst-case-scenario episode. Score: 6.5 14. Code:Breaker [13] - This show certainly has its Tokimeki Memorial-esque moments, and they don't stop seeming out of place. Ogami's certainly got a world view uncommon to characters in these types of shows; that only force will get through to society's most ruthless. Thing is, we haven't seen the most ruthless yet, we've only seen Ogami up against normal people, and no one with powers similar to his own. At only 13 episodes, I'm not sure there's even time to give us a fitting antagonist for him to go up against. I kind of want to read the manga now. Score: 6.4 15. BTOOM [15]- Better than last week, but still rather meh. Don't trust anyone on this island, Sakamoto, not even the moderately overweight ones (and definitely don't trust the obese ones). Somehow Madhouse is losing the "most gore-filled show" award this season. Step it up, guys. Score: 5.8
